| I have heard not good or bad about these rods. I was just wondering if they were worth buying for 40 bucks. Right now I don't want to get a st. croix for 120$. Yes they are nice rods but I need to get somemore lures for the season and save up for the shows:). Thanks for the replys in advance.

| David...if your budget is in the 40-50 dollar range I would not look at anything that claims to be graphite. In that price range get a fiberglass rod...they might be a bit heavier but their performance is better than with "inexpensive" graphite. The very low end graphite has a problem with breaking....decent fiberglass doesn't. Don't know anything about the Gander Mt rods specifically.
Hope This helps,

| David,
I reluctantly purchased two of the rods this spring. They are made over seas by South Bend. The 7'6" Med/Hvy and the 6'6". They are made from IM7 Graphite have Fuji guides. The handle is lower end cork and reel seats are ok but I wouldn't use them for trolling...
I have 8 St.X's, 2 Lamiglass and one Cortland as well as the Gander rods in my boat for use by myself, my wife and my clients.
Two seasons ago I had a client get his line wound up in my trolling motor on his figure 8 and by the time I got it shut down it chewed the *&^% out of the end of an expensive rod.[:knockout:] thus my reasoning for trying a less expensive rod.
So I decided to try the GS Series. The 7-6 casts 5 and 7 inch bucktails nicely as well as 6" jakes/slammers,etc. It is a little light in the back-bone department but I've seen worse. The 6-6 is a fair/ok jerk bait rod... Gander offers two models if I remember correctly one for $40 and one for $59 The $40 ones are junk (my opinion) I bought the $59 on sale for $49. I would possibly consider another 7-6 but not the others.
Here's my suggestion if you are on a limited budget... Cortland makes several models of rods that you can get for around $70-$75. They carry a lifetime warranty..! I have one in 6'6" and its a great rod for the money. I've caught quite a few nice fish on the one I have and it's holding up great. A few more $ and you get a better rod and the lifetime warranty.
I am not pro-staff with any rod manufacturer, would like to be but not as of today so my opinion is simply my .02 cents worth.
Hope it helps you,
Mark

| I haven't tried the Cortlands on the water yet but have heard great things about them. The latest Cortland blanks and completed rods have been designed at least in part by Greg Thorne. Don't know if you guys remember the old Sage rods, but these blanks have been designed to mimic the Sage action, strength & sensitivity. There was never a better rod made, in my humble opinion, than the Sage.

| Hey Mike,
I didn't know that about them, good info though. Terry at Mouldy's convinced me to give one a try a few years ago and I'm not sorry I did. I wish they had a better selection of length/weights. As of last season they had the 6/6 and I think a 6/9 or 7.
David if your reading this go get one on sale, you won't be sorry. The few bucks extra you spend will give you better performance and peace-of-mind.

| Hey David,
I think everyone here is giving you great advice! I would also recommend checking out the Cortland series, did not know that they have a lifetime on them. The warranty and the customer service department are very important to me. If a rod gets busted I usually don't have the money just laying around to go buy what I have and like, so, I definitely feel that buying the best you can the first time is important. good luck in your decision.

Oh yeah forget to tell you to check out falcon and All star, also. falcon under 100 and All Star is just over, both have lifetime warranty.
Sorry, one more idea, check out the buy trade board, Ksauers, Trophymuskie, and sputterbud are all selling good rods at goods prices. |
