A comment ToddM made in another thread made me think of an article I read in a local paper. It said that muskies are not able to reproduce in Webster and that all the muskies in there are stocked. Does anyone know why muskies can't reproduce in there? As I remember in the article they also said that the muskies still went through spawning but were just unproductive.

The chances are slim. Too much suspended sediment and too much soft bottom. The eggs will suffocate. If it happens at all it is on a very limited basis. It may happen on tippy some and some areas of the b-chain along with the river but even that will be limited.

Thanks, I've been trying to figure out why that was.

Another thing the musky have going against them is the size of the body of water. To many other fish and animals will eat the eggs. Since there is only a couple of areas which they will spawn in, the Crappie and Gills also know that when the eggs are left they have an easy meal. Take Dale Hollow lake where they do Reproduce naturally big area of water lots of spawning area's chances are greater for survival.

I know they do spawn. The eggs are viable but most must die off if left in the lake naturally (like toddm explained). The DNR uses the same eggs from the same fish in that lake to stock with. So it must have something to do with lake conditions.
