| My wife is going with me muskie fishing and she's only comfortable using a spinning outfit. I was thinking of getting a big game/saltwater spinning rig for her. My concern is what do I spool it up with? Does Powerpro work well on a spinning outfit? Suggestions please? | |||

Posts: 328 Location: MN | Absolutely! I have 65lb or 80lb Power Pro (can't remember which) spooled on a Shimano Baitruner AX500 that my Dad uses that is paired with a St Croix Muskie Spinning rod... Great rod for working smaller bucktails, top waters, Rapala's, etc....

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | Shimano makes a perfect reel for this. The Sedona 6000. It's a little beefy and the price is about 90.00, but wow is it smooth feeling. The best "big game" spinning reel outside a Penn that I've seen. St.Croix makes an awsome Heavy spinning rod with huge reinforced guides. Put a backing of 20lb test (50-75 yards) mono then a spool of 65-80Lb Power Pro Edited by Gander Mt Guide 8/9/2004 2:09 PM

Posts: 4266 | Check out the St Croix In-Shore spinning rods. I use one of their 7 1/2 footers with a Daiwa SS1300 spooled with Fireline, and it works great for lighter lures. They have so many rods in that series, I'm sure that there is something in there that will fit your needs. www.stcroixrods.com Beav

Posts: 75 Location: ft wayne, IN | Muskie spinning dude here. The St Croix PS 70 hf (7' heavy fast tip rod) or ps 66 vhf (6'6" very heavy rod) rod @ 120$ coupled w/ a shimano 4000 caliber reel of your choosing (stella, stradic) 130$-500$ and 80 lb power pro line work fab for me. This is the only rod(s) I would highly reccommend but other reel makers could include Diawa or Okuma who make decent spinners I'm told. Take her to the store and match the setup to her likings though, she will really appreciate you for that...... JK

| I have a St Croix PS70hf with a Shimano Sahara 4000 that I'd be interested in selling. Bought this rod for my sons to use but they quickly mastered a Garcia 6500. The PS70hf was probably used twice. Let me know if you'd be interested in this rod and reel. Thanks, Johnny B | |||

| I use 30 lb Power Pro on the PS70HF. Works fine. I haven't had a horse on it yet but I have caught several large pike using this rod. Thanks, Johnny B | |||

Posts: 10 | Another testimonial for the St. Croix PS70HF, I throw big gliders and jerks with it, and medium cranks with no problems, I really like the rhythm of a spinner for a great glide/jerk action. My problem now is that the Okuma Avenger50 I bought to go along with this beautiful rod is starting to sound like a coffee grinder in spite of tender loving care and hot sauce. I'm probably going to go to a Daiwa Advantage 4500. Metal body and very smooth. My beef with the lower end Shimanos is that they are still not cheap but have many plastic and graphite parts, such as my Okuma. I do have some smaller, higher end Okumas that have done just great and are still smooth after 3 years of heavy use. Cheers

Posts: 51 Location: Aitkin, Blaine, Minnesota | Guest- I bought a custom rod from Thorne Bros for my girlfriend. It's 7 feet long and can throw anything! I have a little trouble with a Wabull but other than that it can handle anything you want to throw. I have a Sedona 6000 on it. Sweet reel. I went with a custom rod because I could not find a spinning outfit able to withstand the heavier baits. They were too limp/ brittle at the tip. Thorne does a great job at a price surprisingly comparable to the off the shelf rods. Good Luck.
