| I am putting together some baits right now, and am wondering if I need to glue the screw eyes in. I have glued a few, but I am not that sure that it is making any difference.
I screw in the eye part way, back it out, smear some glue on it, and reinsert. Most of the glue seems to push out of the hole. I really dont think it is getting in there and holding to the wood?
Anybody have a better method? Or, do I even need to glue the eyes in?

Location: Holly, MI | I have made a bunch of baits and never glued in any. Unless you rough up the stainless I don't think it would stick to the screw eye any way. I have bought baits with glued in eyes and they will still turn. I pre drill the holes kinda small so the screw eye still turns in very hard. The only reason you might want to use glue would be if the wood was so soft (balsa for example) that the glue (penetrating like superglue) would sink into the wood for strength of the wood itself.

| I put 2-ton epoxy on every screw eye that I put in.
I've just always done it that way.
I never had a screw eye come out of any bait, either mine or someone elses, but I do it anyway just to error on the safe side.

Location: Freedom, WI | A polyurethane glue ( gorilla glue is one brand) works also. Put it in on the tip of the screw eye and run it in. It foams up as it drys (cut it off after drying) or wipe off the extra. It does help to keep it tight and it seals it so water can not get in. |

Jackpots don't use any epoxy, and I have had problems and have seen other fisherman with muskies swiming off with hooks in their jaws due to the screw eyes being pulled out. USE THE EPOXY, better safe than sorry. |

| Make sure you use full cure epoxy...not 5 minute stuff. There is a world difference. Full set is waterproof and quick set is not. I assume being waterproof would be desireable.....

| If you are using a heavy duty screw eye you'll be fine without. |

Location: Waukesha, WI. | I use 2 ton for all screw eyes!! You need to use a pliers to move them. I wouldn't put a bait out without it. And for Jackpots I wouldn't use one until I changed all the screw eyes. I would bet the one that swam away with the hooks broke the screw eye, That is what happen to me. Good bait but needs to have the screw eyes changed to stainless steel and epoxyed in. |

Location: Belgium | I never glue them in in hardwooden baits (cherry wood, beech wood, mahogany, oak, ...) but I do in softer wooden baits like pine, abachi, cedar, ... I have never had a single screw-eye fail in the past 5 years. |

Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | As long as we're talkin screw eyes...replace your suick screw eyes with a nice heavy long stainless one...they come with plated brass ones.....very weak and a couple of tuning bends and snap! |

Location: WI | I've had the screw eyes come out of 2 different Jackpots while fishing. Problem was that it was Dog Fish that pulled them out!!! Mean little b@stards!!!

| Screw eyes will loosen with zigzag baits and cranks that get twitched hard, and from the swelling and shrinking of the wood, this combination does loosen screws. Always glue the eye screws in, either epoxy or polyureathane glue (I prefer the latter). They only ones that don't loosen are the ones that doen't get used much. Better safe than sorry. |

| try seal all on screw eye threads. it really works on dcrew eyes and on lexan lips. just ruff up the end of the lexan |

| Oh definaltey change the screwe eyes on jackpots, they are very cheap. Has anoyone ever cut a jackpot open. It seems like the end is sealed with some type of cheap claylike product and I was wondering if the middle has the same material in it.

Location: London, England | <p>If you put the screw eyes in so that they don't run in the direction of the load they shouldn't pull out whethter they are glued or not. Not sure how to describe what I mean exactly, but sort of don't put them in straight! i.e. For the line attachment on a eddie style glidebait, don't put the screw eye in in a line down the axis the lathe held the wood it, bit have it going either "uphill" or "downhill" so that the pull on the eye isn't straight and just relying on the threads to hold it in. </p><p>Clear as mud now eh?</p> |
