Posts: 670 Location: Minnetonka , MN. | You have to look at food and water temp.Head size can give you some idea. The 51" I got in Canada had a much larger head then the 50" I got in Vermillion. Bigger head older fish. 14years +

I caught a 42"er while a ministry guy was talking to us last year in Canada. He asked to get scale samples so he could age the fish. A few weeks later he called and said the fish was 9 years old and that the growth rate for that fish was excellent.

Posts: 75 Location: ft wayne, IN | I wonder if our current scientific techniques can truly estimate the age of a fish. How do we know a giant ski can't live for 50 or more years up in Canada. For instance, a reliable muskie guide tells me there is a giant fish (70 incher/80 plus pounder) that is seen every few years on a certain spot up on LOTW since the 50's. Apparently the fish has some characteristic markings. Is this fish simply a "freak" of nature or part of the local lore? Apparently the local Indian guides have been tracking this fish. Hard to argue with them--they are extremely perceptive individuals, albeit not scientists. The "average" human lives 70 some years but centenarians are the fastest growng segment of our population. Also, most 100year olds are not that tall. The oldest fish may not be the biggest.....more genetic code coupled with a favorable environment than anything. Any thoughts out there?

Posts: 236 | refresh. great question. all I can say is I caught a 5lb bass and I put him in my pond below my house. I figured he'd only live a couple years because bass don't get much bigger than this in upper michigan. He lived 10 more years!!!
