Troy asked me to go out on MuskyHunter and post in response to people saying WI claims 45 inchers are 50s...etc...

Here is the skinny straight from Troy Spilde's mouth, the man that caught the fish.
He was fishing with Doug Smith (guide at Rollie and Helens), But he and Doug are buddies and they were in Troy's boat in a Vilas County Lake last Sunday.

The fish was 52.5 X 26 and weighted 44.5 lbs. Troy, unfortunately, is a BIG dude at 6 3 and 260 lbs. BUT the fish STILL looks big. Troy is no stranger to big fish and DEFINATELY deserves this one...Congrats big guy!!!!

AND Yes WI does produce some big muskies!
AND this fish was released.....

Beautiful fish! Congratulations on a great catch! That gives all of us Vilas County hunters some hope.

I suppose GPS coordinates are out of the question......

Troy- Congrat's on a very nice fish.

45's that are 50's in Wi, what's this about? Seems like pretty small minded on the part of the individual(s). Is this some sort of anal retentive jealousy? I fish Western Ontario , Minnisota and WI because there are pig's out there and it's more convienent..... Obviously there are also big fish elsewhere.

What's the glory in misrepresenting a fish. When I'm fishing with a partner, I let him/her read the stick. Some folks laugh at my 80 inch muskie stick but it works real well - lay the fish on the stick read the number at each end of the fish. Then subtract small number from large number = length (65-15=50). No pissing around trying to align the fish with a zero mark.

I have seen a few fish that will take up a major portion of my 80" stick (+75%), one swim's in the WI River. You don't believe it- I really don't give a rat's a$$. I'll be ready to measure her if she ever graces the depth of my Beckman Magnum PEN.

Again Troy that's one pretty nice fish

Awesome fish!!!! This has been a strange year for our crew, numbers down but more big fish seen and caught. This is the fourth 50"+ fish that I personally know of from Vilas so far, plus many 42-48's. Seems like all the information on proper handling and release of these fish is really starting to become common practice and we're seeing the results. Congrats Troy and Doug.

No question CPR is working here in Northern Wisconsin. Lakes that used to sport 'average' fish are now putting out some pigs, and things are improving here every year. Again, great fish and congratulations!

Worrall, we finally agree on something!

We're beginning to see bigger fish by us this year too. My brother and I both have boated personal bests. He with a 47+ and me with my largest Tiger at 41+....CPR works, I just wish folks up there would realize that the 50" would help as well.

88-90% of the guys/guides would have thrown it back, just as the guide and angler did in this case.

The politics in the case of Northern Wis is all about $$$$.....guides want clients, resorts want anglers, tackle shops want customers, towns wnt visitors....in the case of Vilas co. there seems to be a huge fear that if the size limits went up, all that money would dissapear.

I can list a bunch of guides I know that push CPR hard, but I also know a few who just dont care either way and it's usually the ones who guide alot more Multi-Species( are'nt known as musky guides) who dont care...pretty sad actually.

Nice fish guy's congrats,

I think that it would help Wisc. a lot if they were to develop a license system similar to Canada's so many $$$ for a regular (Catch & keep) and $$ for a conservation (catch& release). I think that most Joe Weekenders or Joe Onceayears would go for the cheaper conservation license

Just a thought

Congratulations to Troy and Doug.

I have fished with Doug many times. He is a great guy, and he always puts us on fish. Even when we are fishing trophy waters (which is what he mostly fishes). My buddy caught a nice Tiger with him 2 years ago. He has countless stories of big fish. Most of them were hooked for at least a short period.

Here's a pic of the Tiger my buddy caught with Doug.

Yet another pig for Troy. Big surprise! NOT! Nice job Troy, I suppose we'll be seeing more photos similar to this the next time your boat dumps into the lake.
