Subject: Repacking wheel bearings

Getting ready for a trip to Namakagan near Hayward last week of July and I want to make sure my bearings are ok. I have bearing buddie type caps on them, but I've never repacked them and would like to start with fresh bearings, cups, etc. and fresh grease. Problem is, I don't know how to repack or disassemble/reasemble the hubs and bearings. Does anyone know of a good book or website with instructions? Geez- I wish I'da paid attnention when I was a kid and my Dad was repacking every year before our Canada vacations.
Thanks
Whit

I'm in the same - sorry - boat, where I'm not particularly mechanically inclined; so I take my boat and trailer to my favorite auto repair shop each year and have the old bearing grease removed and have new grease and seals installed. They inspect the bearings for wear, check out the brakes, and make needed repairs. Runs me less than fifty bucks but well worth the piece of mind. I'd rather do that than risk a lot on my own (in-)ability. good luck, m

Whit,

Good advice from Mikie... I am able to do my own but without taking pictures for illustration purposes and/ or talking to you over the phone I'm not sure how to type it out... The two biggest items to make sure you get right is driving the inner bearing races in place without damaging them and then when you tighten the tension nut for the hub.. Too loose and you'll ruin the new bearings, too tight and the same will happen only in short order due to overheating...

For $50 take it to a mechanic and ask him if you can watch because you'de like to learn in case you would ever burn one out on the road and would need to replace it yourself...? I would think most guys would be willing to let you watch under those circumstances.

Thanks, guys
I agree with you both, nothing like watching someone do it to really understand how, and I'd hate to jeapardize a peaceful trip by not being sure of my job.
Might go with LiquaLube system.
Thanks

One thing to remember is that more bearings have been ruined by putting them back together too tight than too loose.

Whit-

This is relatively a simple job. I change and repack them 1-2x per year. I am awaiting my liqua lube bearing kit to install. If you want some good advice on changing your bearings here is a good article.

The following boards have great articles on "how to"

If you are changing out your races you can use your old races to get the new ones in. Use a grinding wheel on the old races and grind down the outsides of them to use to tap the new ones in. Just make sure you grind enough of the old races down so they slide easily in and out of the hub.

Hey Running Hot,
thanks for the advice and the links. I found a neighbor who will do it and let me watch for a 6 pack.
I bookmarked those links, in case I forget what he does.
THanks agaIN

Whit, make sure he does the bearings BEFORE the 6 pack! hehehe

Good info for those who haven't done it, or done it right, R H.
