My brother is getting married this August in ON, CA. He is renting a large cabin on Lake Dalrymple. I have done some research, but have not found out too much info. I do know this lake has muskies, are they worth fishing for? Or should I trailer my rig to some other lake?

Todd,

There are muskies here, and potential for 50" natural or hybrids (non-stocked); however, this is not a numbers lake. Some big pike too. (20+ pounders have come out of here primarily in the fall.) It's a land-locked lake, so gets very minimal pressure for pike or muskies, and very little intelligent pressure. The northern half of the lake (Lower Dalrymple) has a couple of decent shoals with some good cabbage beds, as well as some depth. The Upper Lake (southern half) is extremely eutrophic and shallow, with very heavy weeds. (Largemouth heaven). Most of the larger speciments come from the deeper waters. Limited launching capabilities - primarily at the two campgrounds at the northend (Meadows End and Layzee Acres). You'll have a difficult time getting a decent hydrographic map of the lake - suggest you might try Adventure Maps. (I think they have an Internet site.) You'll find a concentration of walleye boats all around Avery Point constantly. Some excellent casting water around the rocky islands and outcroppings at the extreme top end near Meadows End worth checking out. It's been many years since I fished it, but I always managed to catch lots of walleye and bass... a few pike, and I used to tangle with the odd muskie before I fished much for them.

If you decide trailer, you'll likely go to Couchiching. Bigger muskies and pike (and hybrids) here... a 40 pounder is not impossible, but extremely rare. But this lake has some nasty rock shoals and blows up incredibly quickly into something you wouldn't want to be on with anything less than a Great Lakes salmon boat, so you have to show some real careful planning and care out there. A hydrographic navigation chart is available for Couchiching, with structures and depths clearly marked, as this is part of the Trent-Severn System that boaters can use to travel up to Georgian Bay.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction.

Regards,

My in-laws have a cottage on Dalrymple. I know they have a local fishing club that stocks a lot of walleye. No one I know really targets it as a muskie lake which you can read either way. On the other hand, you're not far from Balsam. Cameron and many other Kawartha lakes. You're also close to (2 hours-ish) to Georgian Bay - Moon River area. One thing that's for sure if you hit the Kawarthas, you can fish a variety of lakes in a day. Again, like Steve said, you'll likely want the charts for those lakes.
