This is off topic but I was just thinking I would see see how many of you have ever fished for tarpon. I saw this mentioned on another board but thaught I would see who has all tried this out and if the connection between muskie anglers and tarpon is really there. Just moved to Florida for an internship at the Living Seas at Walt Disney World and I have been diving with these things for the last 2 weeks in the main tank. If anyone has any info or thinks that it would be worth it to go (since money is pretty tight) let me know. Would muskie tackle hold up??

I once saw a partners' 6500C/Skyline muskie outfit (yes, I'm dating myself) stripped of 20 llb mono by a 40+lber. The answer is ..NO!!! Any fish you can hand feed and make friends with (like at Robbie's down in Islamorada), I don't want to pursue as a trophy sport fish. If muskies turn into friendly bread sucking fish like the carp at Maynard's on Minnetonka, then my quest will turn to the fugly ill tempered gill flaring walleye (Sorry Walleye 1st guys).

Don't kid your self. Tarpon are geat fun, I have fished them in Peurto Rico with live bait and it was a blast. Using light spinning tackle we approached areas where tarpon were rolling on the surface and drifted through with live bait. One day I spent 2 1/2 hours hooked up to a particularly tough hombre. I understand its a way different thing on the flats where since they cannot go down they jump and get tired faster. Almost all saltwater fish fight harder than their counterparts in fresh water. Your closest match in salt water is really barracuda but I guess they are more like northerns since if you put bait in front of them they almost always eat.

I had a friend who moved from the midwest down to the keys and am lucky to get to fish there a lot. When he compared saltwater fish to fresh water and he compares the snook to the musky. it has many of the characteristics. It loves to follow a lure and can just ignore a bait in its face. i have yet to get a hold of a snook but did fight a Tarpon fopr about 15 min till the line broke. Quite a fun time.
