Location: Bloomington, MN | I have a couple of Squirrely Burts. I finally used my second and it justs darts VERY sharp to the right (my left). The other one runs about 3 rights to 1 semi-straight on slight pulls/taps. There are no cracks or loose weights and the molding parting lines appear even. I have tried bending the eyelet with no results. Do I dare take an exacto to the cup on the left hand side or could it be caused by the tail due to improper storage? I own many Mania baits and never had a glitch with any of them. Has anyone else had a similar situation?
Thanks, Clark |

| I've renewed my affair with Burts this year (along with a lot of other baits)and have done really well on the squirrely.VERY rarely will they run how I want them to run straight from the package.Get out the blade! You can make the things do some pretty dancin', then WHAM she hangs in their face.Fast, slow, all sorts of pops and pauses.I only use the weighted versions. The unweighted seemed a bit buoyant for what I was looking for it to do.The instructions that come with the bait describe what to do. Use very fine strokes and only take a few shavings each time.Have to be on the water to do it best. It may take 15 minutes to get it right, but the results will be worth the effort. They have shown us fish this year when nothing else did.I do use the unweighted regular burts in some shallow weed situations though. With a shorter rod (7'4" for me) I retreive it fast, almost "snap jigging" the bait , popping it through pockets and such.A little tuning can go a long way!Gook luck! | Clark,
Jonesi is on the mark with shaving the face but you also brought up a good point with checking how "true/square" the tail is inserted to the body.
This is crucial to the burts running properly. What you want to check is the little rings on the tail body should be "square"with the opening in the body. If not cut it off and put another one in. I use Carlson's fishing glue, super glue will work too, and for tails I just use the 8" grubs from Action Plastics and cut most of the body off. MMT sells replacement tails as does Lungen Lures for their baits... It's all pretty much the same tail... Now that didn't sound good..
Burts are a great bait over the weeds and in wood ... Personally I like the fact that they sorta have their own personality and on each pull-twitch they will act a little different.
Good Luck,
Mark Hintz
