which have proven to best the best this year and how about last year? I get strikes on lucky 13 lures, small quiet globes but none on the tallywhacker, bobbie surface bait, poppers and chuggers.

I had more success on "squeakers" like Cherry Twists and Mini Cherry Twists. Also on Topper Stoppers. I had some good follows on "ploppers" like the Topraiders and Topkicks. This year I didn't have anything on walk the dogs which is unusual.

when do you reach for the surface lures or doesn't it matter what weather it is and what the water temperature is? Over here the water has been hot all summer with temps up to 25°C, for real! Even the rivers were 23°C

Try working an Undertaker across the top, then hesitate a few feet from the boat and twitch it down...lots of action, and lots of fish up to 46 this year on that thing.[]

Musky Busters were also good to me; as was the famous Dog Turd![:)]

I throw a lot of topwaters in summer and fall. I like the husky size Hawg Wobbler, because its louder than the regular one, yet doesnt get thrown as easy as the magnum size. I'm not a huge fan of "ploppers". I do catch fish on them, but mostly only in windy conditions, Top Raider, LOWrider, Musky Busters. They get used a lot here. I like "squealers" the most. Topper Stopper, usually takes a couple fish to get it sounding good. I caught a ton of fish on them this year. TNT's, I used to laugh at these things, not anymore. Takes a while to get a touch with them. Finally, Jackpots and such, I use these more towards the end of the year, they are great to use on conditioned fish. I've got a lot of spots that hold fish in less than 3 feet throughout much of summer, and these baits are what I rely. Sometimes I want a loud bait(TNT), and other times quiet(jackpot). Later

do you get any strikes from northerns?

It seems the northerns I consistantly get on surface baitrs are on hawgwobblers buzzbaits(TNT's fall into this bracket) and globes, most often. I don't get more than the occasional pike on other surface baits.

Thunderheads, Topper Stoppers, Musky Busters and Topraiders were my hottest tops this year..Same as the year before too.

Maybe its a confidence thing.. if its at home and never goes in the boat, then the bait can never have a chance to redeam itself.[;)]

For years I taught that you needed to make a ton of noise on top to catch fish. The past few years I have done great with baits that I can hardly hear during the retrieve. I have a certain Hawg Wobbler ( it has been named "Mother", the mother of all Hawg Wobblers) that makes NO NOISE that I can hear and only makes a "V" wake when retrieved. This bait have produced 1 fish over 30 pounds and a few fish in the 20 to 25 pound class along with 15 or so others. The only thing that I can think of is that the noise is going DOWN into the water so the fish hear it.
Under clear skies or calm water I seem to do better with the quiet top water baits.
