| I know a lake in Waupaca where they did a musky study 5 years back and was wondering if anyone on the board had any news on how it turned out. You can email me the results. [email protected] Thanks | |||

Posts: 285 | There are muskies in the Chain O lakes, both tigers and natural strain. We saw one 40ish tiger last spring following in a small bass crankbait in Sunset Lake on the north end, but when I talk to the local musky freaks they all point me toward Long Lake, which has both brown trout and suckers for forage. When I was young I'd do a lot of fishing off the docks around Sunset Lake, and we used to see a giant tiger swimming along the north shore of Sunset Lake, it was a dang monster! We were fishing for bluegills and perch, rock bass, crappies, and then all of the sudden here's a supertanker patrolling the shallows. We'd quickly try throwing our largest baits in its face, but those were Mepps 5s and maybe a small daredevil, and the beast ignored those. Now that I have more appropriate gear I would love to score on one of those pigs this summer. I'm thinking I'll try to fish the forage in the deep basin of Rainbow Lake, the Hot Spots map says "trophy pike" have been reported caught using large minnows and suckers in open water there. One guy showed me a casting method for medium size rigged suckers (mabe a bulldawg would work too) Some of the breaks on Rainbow have boulders and weeds next to deep water, which I think is good structure for a larger pike too. Info on muskies in the Chain is hard to find though, so if you hear anything let me know. Waupaca will never be a Muskie destination, but I spend a lot of time there so it would be cool to know an approach that has any reasonable shot! Later, Papa Joe

Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | Being President of the C & R Musky Club, I've thought about trying to get some more fish in there. I think if enough fish were put in there, they would do very well, and it is no wake on most of the lakes. The lakes are deep, clear, and have some nice weedbeds(especially Sunset). Oh ya, a few nice bars too....did someone say bar? Edited by Jomusky 5/15/2004 6:12 AM

Posts: 686 Location: Tomahawk, Wisconsin | I would go out and fish the lakes from one end of the chain to the other and just fish SPOTS that look like muskie spots. I have seen muskies on the little end of the chain such as Marl on down to the bigger lakes. Is the question about the Long Lake brood stock though?? There are fish in the chain but they are few and most definitely scattered.
