Posts: 2361 | Was recently talking out on the lake with another fisherman and he semi invited me to fish with him and suggested I could even leave my boat at home. I usually enjoy not having to take my boat and fish from the front on the rare occasion I get an invite from someone, so I was pleased. However after I thought about it considered it was probably a mixed message. My front deck held about 2 dozen lures most of which were in a heap and could have been all picked up by picking any individual lure up(all hooked together). My tackle bag was open with one or two boxes exposed, leaders scattered on the floor, and due to some experimenting I have been doing, TEN rods were also scattered about the boat, and more than a couple hooked together. There were also rod holders, unmatched rain clothes, and more loose scattered baits along with a large net, an outrigger pole, a bait retriever, and a push off pole. Of course I haven't talked about the trash and the loose stuff, and probably I shouldn't, but I will mention I had at least a couple marker bouys and some other junk scattered around and 3 screw drivers, 2 sets of pliers, and an old leather unhooking glove that maybe has a little greenish mold growing on it, BUT....I had taken the rotten apples out of the rod box and dumped most of the empty tin cans and all the styrafoam cups out before I left. Yes, I do have a big boat and due to being lonely I carry a lot of stuff with me when I go out there these days because I am trying some things out and need all this extra with me. The funny thing was, while we were talking I looked over at his boat and every place had its thing and every thing had its place. SOMETIMES, my boat looks like that, usually when I clean it out to take kids tubing and swimming in the summer. And IF somebody comes down to fish with me I do make an effort to minimize the junk. I kind of got tickled thinking maybe the reason he said I didn't need to bring my boat was, looking into it he thought it would be impossible for two to fish out of it. So, what are you, when you are by yourself, neat or nasty?

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I am a neat freak in the boat, probably because of the years I guided. If one had stuff out of place it was either stepped on, kicked, sat upon, or otherwise stuck, snapped, or bruised in, off by, or upon a client.

Posts: 80 | Definitely neat. Landing a muskie can be hard enough in a perfectly clean boat with two people, let alone one cluttered with all kinds of tackle, rods, gear. I can guarantee you that if I were to hook into a muskie while fishing alone that pile of lures would somehow find a way to tangle in the net, or my arm, leg, hand, etc., and I would manage to step on and break the rods or anyting else within reach. I can see myself fishing alone, hooking a fish, trying to land it with the net, having the net get wrapped up in a pile of lures, me losing fish, me crying like a baby... Not to get off topic, but I think I will have to hang onto my old Beckman when fishing alone, as the new Frabill my girlfriend bought for me (godbless her) is huge, awfully heavy, and a bit awkward to handle with one arm.... either that or I will have to start some serious weight training program, maybe I can do arm curls with it to get into shape Edited by JWB475 5/4/2004 7:45 PM

Posts: 568 | Hey firsty -- hope you are having a good spring, Green River being good to ya ?? fished the cave any , I have been to cave run once this year, hit a stump in my bro's new boat and broke the shaft off, losing the prop , thought I might have damaged the lower unit but did'nt , LUCKY ME ! ha --- anyway did score today , caught a very nice 37 incher out of the local steam, hooked 1 other and raised 2 more , so it was a good day. fish above 35 out of the creek are hard to come by. I enjoyed fishing with you last fall maybe we can hook up again , my main partner in leaving for construction job in kansas july-dec. by the way count me as a neat freak Take care ManitouDan Dan Stevenson

Posts: 1168 | Definately neat....which goes against all of my normal organizational style!! Everything is marked and organized neatly and returned to it's rightful place. It is just handier that way so you can be more productive on the water. Plus having to deal with a mess while fighting a fish and while you are out at night is a royal pain. My brother on the other hand is beyond nasty. Last fall we spent 3 hours out together and I suggested we keep a cast count and he got my point of keeping stuff tidy in order to be more efficient. It is funny though that since I got a bigger boat last fall I do feel the need to bring more stuff along. Keeps the tackle manufacturers happy as I am sure I did my best to fund more than one college education over the past 6 months.

Posts: 459 Location: New Baden IL | 6:00 AM: definately neat 6:05 AM: NASTY....I have everything I own all around the boat, I cant help it. By the time I get out what I need, I pull out 3-4 things I think I'll use. Gotta have 6 rods out at all times, because I have 2 arms. 7:00 Breakfast is spilled on the floor and stuff is out ready to eat, for some reason I have a hollow leg in the boat. By the end of the day, and the boat is back on the trailer, everything is put away and NEAT again...till the next day. Rod

Posts: 364 Location: in the white boat | I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. I have a friend who takes the neat freak thing to the level of obsessive compulsive. We pretty much stopped fishing out of his boat because the minnow scales and occasional worm guts spilled on his carpet made him hyperventilate. The last straw was on an early season walleye trip when one of the fish had the nerve to bleed a few drops on one of his seats. Thought I was going to have to get him a few valiums and a straight jacket. While I'm not quite that bad, I like my boat organized, and clean enough to get around when I'm on the water without risking anyone's health.

Posts: 73 Location: Hazard KY | It seems like I start out with everything put up and out of the way but by the end of the day a cyclone has blasted its way though and all hell has broken loose. If its a slow day the lure pile can get a little scary. Good fishin Chris Haley www.kentuckymuskie.com

Posts: 3926 | Way neat, all the time. Always know where everything is, nothing out to snag on, step on or sit on. Proabably because I night fish a lot, must have everything where I need it when I need it. Took a guy fishing once, he left a bunch of his lures laying around the front of the boat. Hooked a big fish and in the excitement he sat on one of his cranks. Saw it comining from a mile away.

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | I am like a few others. Neat at 5:00 AM, by 5:30 a little messier, by 6:00 half of the baits are hanging on the rails (but still orderly) By 9, the pile is likely huge. If by myself though, I do keep a pretty clean boat, as you need to access nets, cutters, hookouts, etc easily. Not to good when there is 18 baits stuck in the net. When with a certain crew though, it can become an organized disaster. I don't think that made any sense, but you get what I mean.

Posts: 1769 Location: Algonquin, ILL | NEAT, NEAT, NEAT!!!! There's a place for everything, One major rule in my boat is to put everything away in it's place when it's not being used ask anyone who has ever fished with me there is never a loose bait ,Tools or misc stuff laying around all needs to be put away NOW if not being used it's just a lot safer that way and I will always know where to find something if I nead it

Posts: 1764 Location: Ogden, Ut | I have a system of 'organized chaos' that I like to use. It makes sense to me, but my boat partners think I'm a slob... I usually put things in a more or less static location once I'm finished w/ them, but I leave lures hanging out until they dry. Kent

Posts: 125 Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota | My boat usually starts out neat, but by the time I get back to the boat launch, it usually looks like a bomb went off. Well actually it is more of a controlled chaos, but to the untrained eye, it would appear nasty.

![]() Posts: 910 Location: Hastings, mn, 55033 | i am a neat freak. when fishing alone, my boat is always well organized, and everything i need is easily accessible. when fishing with others, especially one particular friend, they do their best to trash my boat. coffee cups, half eaten lunches, half drank "sodas", lures, etc laying all over the place. the one guy is so bad i have had to threaten banishment from my boat if he cant keep things organized!! i also seem to have the problem of a shrinking boat. when its in the garage, it looks plenty big. when i load up the tackles box(es) rods, cooler, net and other miscellaneous things it suddenly feels like a 12' canoe!!
