| Despite some highly volatile weather and unseasonable temperatures, things continue to look good in the more southern and western Kawartha Lakes. Providing you have a boat big enough to handle the waves (we had 4 straight days of winds ranging from 35 to 50 mph), and are diligent enough to try just about anything - the fish are still hitting. Lots of 30" fish on the deep weed edges in Balsam, Pigeon and Sturgeon. The big fish have gone deep however. If you want big fish, you'll have to be prepared to troll the open water and be patient. Fishing during twilight hours may be the exception for some larger fish on these deeper water bodies. On Scugog and Rice, the pattern changes daily... one day the fish are buried in the weeds, the next they are on the edges or in open water. Regardless of which of these lakes you are fishing, the baitfish are the key. Watch where the baitfish are, and what their relationship is to the weeds. If they are down low in the weeds, the muskies will likely be in there with them. If they're up high over the weeds, muskies will be on the edges. If they're in open water... well, that's an easy one.
53 fish in the boat so far this season in just under 6 weeks, with 25 of these over 40". Not a bad start to 2001!

| Steve,
Glad to see you are still briging them into the boat. Can't wait for my trip to the beautiful Kawarthas. 2 weeks to go...any news on Stoney? I have a few spots from last year.
Things here in eastrn Ontario are picking up. Got 1 yesterday and 1 today...who says size matters.... |

| Thanks for the report Steve.
Anything on Katchewanooka. Renting a cottage there for third week of August. What works well at that time of year?

| Bill,
Sorry, but that one is way out of my territory. It is also a lake we hear very little about. I do remember seeing charts of the lake at one point, and it seems to me that there is some good structure there, so you should be able to get into some good fish.
