Subject: What type of charger do I need??

Hi there, I am buying a boat and want to put a minn kota PD65 (24v) on the bow. The sales guy tells me I only need a 2 bank charger for the trolling motor, and to run my fishfinder and main motor off the cranking battery. Is this the best set-up or should I get a 3 bank charger and have the cranking battery also hooked to it? I'm not to sure what to do.

Buying Crestliner FishHawk1750 sc. With a Honda 75.

I dunno what will work best for you, but I find that my cranking battery is not charging well off the outboard. So, right now I have a 2 bank charger for the troller batteries, I'm adding a 1.5 amp charger to my hold just for the cranker. I think the troller charger charges at a higher rate than I need, so I'm hoping this trickle charger will be just enough to keep my crank battery hot and firing. I think iboats.com has a good section on batteries, you might check there, too. m

A 2-bank will do, but why not go for the 3-bank? If you have a couple sonars, livewell, radio, Gps, and any other accessories running of the starting battery, it helps to keep it fully charged.

I have a 2 bank on my 1999 Sprint bassboat with a 200 Merc, which I bought new and have never had a problem with my starting battery running down. It is connected to my trolling batteries and my other electronics run off my starting battery. My electronics are 2 depthfinders, a marine radio and a GPS. Having said that, If I were to do it again, I would get a 3 bank charger.

I have heard its not good to have your starting battery hooked to a 3 bank charger(24v trolling. Does it damage the battery or not? I am thinking if I get one of the 3 bank chargers that has the automatic shutoff so there should be no chance of damaging the battery. Really not to sure though!!

No problem having the starting battery connected to the 3rd bank. In fact, most charger manufacturers have chargers specifically designed for this. I have the Guest 3 bank, 10/10/5. The 5 Amp is for the starting battery. All banks are fully automatic. When I get back from a day on the water, my starter always needs a little topping off, especially when I don't run the big motor alot.

I have a AP65 w/Universal Sonar. Deep Cycle Batteries were purchased at Remy Battery here in Milwaukee. Great battery at a real good price. Been using these for 15 years, and they last a long time.

I may have a Quest 3 bank, Model # 2623B, available at a pre-increase price. Let me know if you are interested.
