My trolling motor batteries are going on their 4th season and I'm not sure if they will survive the season. Curious what are the most popular batteries for a 24 volt trolling motor system these days? How much do they cost? Where do you get them? Thanks.

Jlong-

I like the Trojan batteries. I have the scs225 series for my TM. Search the site, this topic came up before. Try the website
http://www.trojanbattery.com/freshwater.asp

I got mine through Battery Service Corp in bensenville. They drove them to my house at no cost and took my old ones. These are a top of the line battery.

I like the new Spiral Cell bateries, Optima and Orbital.. I have the Orbital and have no problems at all with it. They seem to last long and charge quick, plus are smaller then regular deep cycles(reserve capacity runs from around 90 up to around 155 for the new 31 size Optima). Another battery I like is the Stowaway 850(regular type deep cycle with around 180 reserve I think). Prices for the Orbital was $99 at Sam's Club and the 850 Stowaway was $59 I think. The optima's run$$ a lot higher then the Orbital. If you decide to go with the trojan here's a link to that Batteru service place mentioned above: http://www.batteryservice.com/

Jason,

I was in the same situation last fall. I put in Interstate's 27 series deep cycle for my 24 volt system. They were a refurb at $25 or $30 a piece. I heard real good things about the refurbs and had one in my truck a couple years ago with no problems. They warranty them for full replacement for one year. The new batteries have a replacement for two years i think. The manager said that they don't have any more problems with them than they do with brand new ones. Basically the shell is from an old battery and the guts are all new. The best part is they are 1/3 the price of new which leaves more $$$$ for other goodies!!!!! They don't always have them in stock and when they get a shipment in around here, they go fast. Good luck.

I've been using batteries from Remy down here in Milwaukee. They last a long time, and take a full charge in a couple hours after a day of use. I had one in my old Tuffy with 12V TM, and it lasted 5 years and was still going strong when I sold the boat. The 2 I have in my new boat are great. I can get 3 full days out of them without charging, and well over a day if the wind is really making them work.

Plus, they are $60. A real deal.

If you have an Auto Zone near by look at their Duralast batteries. The are made by Johnson Controls who also makes Optima, Interstate and others. Their warranty is one of the best and they are not that expensive. I have been using them in my boats and vehicles for about 6 years and have not had a problem.

Jason,

You can get the tournament series stowaways at Sams in Appleton for about $65.00 apiece. They have the highest rated amp hour and reserve capacity of ANY deep cycle battery. They will outlast any orbital or spiral cell. I have nothing but bad things to say about orbital batteries. If you cant get into Sams let me know.

Yet another vote for the Trojans. Not many batteries compare in reserve capacity minutes.

I just bought 2 of the biggest Deep cycles from Fleet Farm. I have had good luck with their batteries, they have lasted 4-6 years for me and I fish alot. They are only $53 each and have a 2-year warranty. How can you justify spending $100 on a battery if it might only last one year longer? The only thing I would spend more money for would be if it was a maintenance free battery which I wouldn't have to add water too ever. I wouldn't get a gel battery because they don't tolerate overcharging and need a special charger to get the most life out of them.

I feel the best thing to help battery longevity is to have a high quality on board charger and charge them at the end of every day. Also, monitor the water level and replenish it with distilled water only.

I checked last night at Sams. $65.83

- 205 Amp Hours
- 400 Reserve Capacity Minutes @ 25 amps
- 105 Reserve Capacity Minutes @ Full Output

These are great batteries at an even better price !!!!

I run a G3 185 deep v boat. My trolling motor is 24v 74lb Minn Kota Maxxum. I have two Dual Pro 2700s for my deep cycle. A Dual Pro 2400 for my cranking battery. All of this complimented by a Dual Pro Xtremed battery charger. What is unique about this system is that my trolling motor is supposed to get 5X's use out of a single charge. The Dual Pro Xtreme charger puts a trickle charge back into my deep cycle batteries while i am running down the lake. The charger first makes sure the cranking battery is charged before charging my trolling batteries. This system works great for me.

Off to a slow start this year, but plan to get the boat wet this week. Been plugging in the charger once a week for the past 3 weeks and the the batteries have been pulling a pretty good charge each time (without any use). I'm assuming that is a red flag that they are beginning to die????

From what I can tell... I have three basic options:

1. Buy some cheap one's and replace as needed
2. Stowaway or Trojan Deep Cycle.
3. Spiral Cell (Optima or Orbital).

Right now I'm leaning towards the Stowaway with a high reserve (fits my budget but seems a step up from the cheapos).

Any last recommendations????

Well going with the budget I would say get the Stowaway 850 Dual Purpose(Starter/deepcycle), Sam's club should carry them, though my local one does not. Which looking at this topic..it reminds me, gotta get mine out of the boat and get it charged...

Jason,

I just purchased 2 Stowaway/Orbital spiral cells from Sam's Club. They are $129 a battery. I hope they last for quite a few years, as my wife wasn't to happy with the bill for 2 trolling motor batteries, and a new starter ($50).

Trojan batteries are high quality. I just purchased two SCS225s. You would be hard pressed to find a better battery. Unless, you need to store your batteries on a non-level surface buy Trojan over sealed maintnance free Deep Cycles like Optima.

Take a look at their website, never seen a more detailed site with great information about battery maintanence and general deep cycle knowledge. This is a sure mark of quality.

You can be confident in my opinion. I am a elctro/mechanical engineer that spent about 4 weeks deciding what batteries I wanted. Degrees aside, I put this batteries in my boat and they flat out impressed the sh*t out of me. Only downside was installing them; I spent about 4 hrs trying to squezze the batteries into my Lund's batt. storage. Moreover, I even spoke to Trojan's tech service and put thier applications engineer on the spot. He knew his stuff and seemed to be downright honest.

Lastly, I would avoid Excide at all costs as they are on the verge of bankruptcy. MinnKota looks to be switching thier contract with Excide to Trojan, more evidence about the quality of Trojan.

Earlier this year I went to find a Stowaway dual purpose, couldn't find them anywhere..ended up with a trojan scs200 instead. So far so good with that battery.
