| 1. You have to spend a ton of time fishing for muskies in order to learn how to catch muskies. There's a lot that can go wrong - botched figure 8's, too fast, too slow, too shallow, too dee, poor hooksets, dull hooks.... read the fish. It's a fish, not a book, you want me to read it?!
2. You're not going to encounter of catch a lot of fish on a low density fishery, and you're not going to catch a 50"er in a lake where one does not exist. That 44"er you caught may very well have been one of the biggest fish in the lake. You're also not going to have many opportunities on a heavily pressured lake. You may only see 1 fish, and if you have a shot at it, it's the only one you're probably going to get.
We had a day some years back... "There's one!" "There's another one!" "I got one going over here, too!" It was like somebody pushed the "go" button. We couldn't get a single one to eat, and we lost count at two dozen. Coupla BIG ones, too. I learned more about figure 8's and reading the fish that morning than I had in probably 100 days prior on the water.
If you want to catch more and bigger fish, start where there are a lot of big fish.
The next season I had a 6 fish day, with four of them being between 45 and 48. Saw two others, which I messed up because I wasn't paying attention. I doubt I would have caught more than one of them if it wasn't for the fact that I had an entire morning where there were fish coming out of everywhere. Thinking back to all the ones I didn't catch over the years, I probably would have caught a lot of them if I had a few more fish under my belt at the time.
So yeah, fish in the right place. Fish at the right time if you have any control over that. Beyond that, always be ready! I don't know how they know but you can throw 200 casts and if you got your head up your arse on # 201 that's when one is going to show up. They know! |

Location: Brighton CO. | Between my grandpa's, my dad and I we been hitting the lakes of the Northwoods for over 90 years, my dad's first trip up north was in 1936. My mom's side of the family helped dig the lakes in the Bena/Deer River area. The task is easier with 8-9 foot rods modern reels with drags and braided line and quality leaders and lures that don't pull apart on large fish and big nets rather a gaff. Next get on a lake of river system with has a history of big fish. I've only seen one true monster in all my fishing and my dad and grandpa 4 or five. A world record? No they don't get that big. Only if you fell them full of wet sand.
And yes there's a learning curve both being ready and or fishing with old tackle from yesteryear that has failed us. What has worked for me? Fishing big fish water with good gear and in the fall with shorter days were your mind don't wonder. With proper fundamental's and the right weather you can catch a number of large fish in a short period of time however there are not many true 40 pound or bigger fish swimming around.

Locating the fish is half your battle
Second half main strategy is imitate what they are eating with the biggest easiest option for them specifically if nobody else is throwing them
If that isn't working reaction baits are the answer this is where it gets complicated
In general fish act different on different bodies of water
Hypothetical Example being what works for St Lawrence muskies might not work for Niagara river muskies and the 3 sub species might make it more complicated
If all else fails you can try the not try to catch them trick hypothetical example you see a muskie in a walleye spot pull out a walleye lure and fish it for the muskie
Seems like walleye guys get them a lot doing that
Not a experienced muskie fisherman but from what i have researched on them and learned with other fish species (pike pickerel etc) that is what i would recommend |
