Location: Athens, Ohio | "Postherpetic neuralgia (post-hur-PET-ik noo-RAL-juh) is the most common complication of shingles. It causes a burning pain in nerves and skin. The pain lasts long after the rash and blisters of shingles go away. The risk of postherpetic neuralgia rises with age. It mainly affects people older than 60. There's no cure, but treatments can ease symptoms. For most people, postherpetic neuralgia gets better over time." My wife had shingles a few years ago with many of these symptoms, but they were localized to the affected area and not body-wide. Her infection kept re-occurring to the point she is on daily treatment. m

My late mother had this in her scalp. Sadly, it never went away. She got some relief from Ibuprofen. I have had both of the shingles vaccines and got them as soon as I was eligible. Hopefully, they have some treatment today that they didn't have in my mother's time.

Similar story as North of 8 - mom had it, a good friend, and others. I got the first shingles vaccine when it came out and when age eligible and more recently the more effective vaccine (Shingrix). Note that the vaccines not only prevent one from getting shingles initially, but do prevent/reduce the PHN symptoms if you have got shingles. Edited by Angling Oracle 2/20/2025 10:07 AM

If I am ever in the position of having chronic pain, I would follow the suggestion of going across the border. Guy I have gotten to know at the YMCA has a condition where his hands are twisted out of shape (not arthritis) and causing constant pain. He was a combat medic in Vietnam and very leery of pain meds. However, he found a type of gummy that takes the edge off and it is not addictive. He goes to the U.P. (Crystal Falls) Our local state senator has tried for almost three years to get a bill before the state senate that would allow medical cannabis but the Republican chairman won't allow to come to a vote.

Posts: 1536 Location: Brighton CO. | We just changed one of my moms medicine for kidney issues the new one cost more. In my 60's I only have to take a statin the less you take the better. As we age we may not have a choice in what we have to take to keep going. I've been on fishing trips and guys on the trip had a whole pharmacy in there room. Colorado was one of the first states to get legalist Cannabis and all the rift raft that come with it. Our population went thru the roof along with the cost of living. Medical Cannabis does a lot of people good but less stuff you put in your body the better.
