Not fishing related, but if you are going to be in the Eagle River area, the Ice Castle is returning this year after a couple years where the ice was not adequate. It is a project of the volunteer fire department and other local volunteers. The main tower will be 28 feet high. They hope to have it completed sometime tomorrow. The time to go is after dark, when the structure is lighted. Right now, local hospitality industry in the WI Northwoods is hurting, no snow = no snowmobilers. So stop by, take in a really neat structure, stop for some food and beverages.

Posts: 352 Location: Vilas County, WI | I work around the corner from the ice castle and it truly is a sight, especially at night as mentioned above. It's unfortunate that the snowmobile trails aren't open yet, especially after last winter. I've worked with a few business owners that lose 10K per day, each day the trails aren't open. We do have plenty other events going on though if anyone is looking for something to do. The Derby snowmobile races in Eagle River are always cool; TNT Speedway in Three Lakes is running some ice stock car races; Falcons and Windigo Hockey games at the Dome; And there's plenty of ice fishing tournaments to be had as well.

Followed my own advice tonight. Went out to eat and then to the ice castle. It is very cool at night with the lights. Wind chill was a little brisk but kids were running around, posing on the "throne". Because of the wind and the snow, folks were not staying long, but steady stream of visitors. Lot of work on the part of all those volunteers.
