Posts: 155 Location: Rochester, New York | While I have had luck with both weedless daredevles and spinnerbaits for pike i was wondering what conditions causes one to outperform the other in getting more fish

Posts: 759 | Both perform equally well in my opinion near weedy type cover. However, if throwing a spinnerbait and you continually foul up with weeds, it's telling you it's time to switch to the spoon. Kdawg

Kdawg I noticed they both do really well but why do the fish perfer one over the other on certain days there has to be a reason

Posts: 526 Location: NW WI | Speed is the biggest difference in my opinion. Some days yes they love blades just a burning and you get that violent reaction bite. Other days if cover allows they want that blade dropped and slowed as low as it can go so it's slowly banging around against vegetation. On the water I've hit the most I've found pretty consistent that when it's bright and high sun that I'm burning and bulging bright painted blades. Cloudy or dusk or dawn I'm slowing down and using naturalish skirts with metallic blades. Now I've applied that rule to other sloppy systems and it's no longer true. Your spoon bite offers versatility in the fact that you can throw it on dry land have it ploop in and scuttle the bottom like a jig, than pop it up and topwater it over dense cover just to let it pause and flutter down with a tantalizing trailer into holes or right at the weed, edge, if something was lurking on ya and it sees its prey right outside the cover it was lurking in just twitching and falling, not really going anywhere, it's gunna bite. Where as your blades will have already exited the strike zone potentially.

I noticed that the spinnerbait i dont have to worry about reeling in to fast unlike the daredevle where the slow retrieve would just get me dragged through weeds So Spinnerbait when they are active and sunny and when its cloudy/ rainy and slow yse a spoon Also how deep can i go with the spinnerbait before going to the spoon

Posts: 526 Location: NW WI | I wouldn't confidently recommend following my rule because it doesn't apply to other systems, trust me I've tried many times. Just that system I frequent I've found it to be almost entirely true. But if I recall your hitting alot of the same water when you go- so start playing and paying attention to conditions and I guarantee you'll develop a pattern over time. It might not always hold true, but at least you have a confident starting point everytime. Also try burning your blades when your standard retrieve isn't producing, it's should be just below the surface so you can see the water waking. Your spoon fouling though, I'm not a weedless Daredevil fan, it's not weedless enough in my opinion, same with weedless doctor. Their mass is their issue I believe, fine for less dense cabbage and thats it. If your after pike I recommend downsizing to a Jhonson silver minnow weedless, and for Muskie a slop master spoon. Another option is any snap ringed hooked spoon can be replaced with an EWG hook and you can texas rig a plastic trailer and be extremely weedless, this takes some playing and experiment so as not to kill the action of the spoon.

I never had anything show interest in the silver minnow Spoon hasnt fouled me yet

Posts: 1392 Location: Brighton CO. | You can learn how to bring a lure thru the weeds with minimal problems, The thicker the cover the shorter the cast. And buy the best eyewear you can afford.
