Posts: 81 | I'm about to get my new boat and start trolling for musky, so I was wondering which of the supernatural crankbaits I should get. I'm in the Northwest Corner of PA where the forage primarily consists of shad, perch, shiners, and baby carp and the lakes have an average depth between 15 and 20 feet.

Duff the maker off Supernatural baits likes the Headlock in colder water situations and cold front situations. Lip Locks are great true they are bigger yet and costly you can buy 2 of the others to one Lip Lock

Posts: 81 | Do you think the liplock would be too big considering the forage in the area being primarily shad/perch/shiners? Do you think the color of the lure matters?

Read the specs on a Liplock. I have a Headlock but it pales in comparison. 15" long, body is 2" x 3" and weight of 20 oz. That is one hefty lure.

Some will run two big baits up front to get the fish's attention, then two smaller baits come through second and get eaten.

Posts: 1218 Location: Walker, MN | FWIW, here's a size comp of some of the more popular trolling cranks. Llungen Chad Shad Llungen 22 Long Legend Perchbait 8Five Mattlock 8Five Jointed Mattlock 10" Mattlock 12" Headlock LipLock One side note: I feel like a jointed lure can sometimes resemble a couple smaller baitfish, but still has a very big presence in the water. A Liplock is $350. Too much to justify IMO. I could justify it if it is as good of a lure as I hear it is. My concern is just that it will be way too big for the muskie around me considering the main forage is shad, shiners, and perch and I've heard the average muskie around me is in the high 30s to low 40s, so the lure would be more than a third of the size of the muskie, whereas the 8.5 inch mattlock would be a quarter to a fifth of the size of the average muskie.

Posts: 1251 | A few thought's Do you size wise match the hatch? Or I've fished with guide who catches very large fish and who believes that no lure is too big! Or like the late Tom Gelb muskies like smaller 5 inch easy digestible food that are easy to suck in.

I think matching the hatch would make the most sense considering that's the primary forage, although it isn't unheard of for perch/gizzard shad to reach 12+ inches and the 15 inches of the liplock is including the lip.
