Has anyone had this happen, the other day i was topping off my remote oil tank and noticed the oil i was pouring in looked chunky not a smooth flow, so i strained what was left in the gallon bottle and there is little globs that are gelled up. The oil was purchased within the last 2 years and container was sealed, it has been stored in a heated garage that usually doesn't get below 45 degrees, i plan on emptying the remote oil tank completely but just wanted your thoughts on why this could happen perhaps a bad batch???

My 1st guess is you bought cheap oil. I've been using Amsoil for several years with zero issues.

Quicksilver synthetic blend not the cheapest out there average price is $40 a gallon been using it for 20+ years and never had an issue until now, I contacted the company to inform them about this issue and the response I got was not what I expected, so I will be switching to possibly either Amsoil, or Klotz-- my snowmobile buddy recommend them, any other suggestions?

Always ok with quick silver too. Never an amsoil fan after a couple lower unit changes. Didn’t care for the black look. Not saying it was wrong just didn’t look right

Just signed up to the board so I could chime in on this post about Quicksilver oil. I have a 98 Willie Predator aluminum boat with a 175 sport jet in it. I use it for steelhead, salmon, and sturgeon fishing on the Cowlitz and Columbia rivers out here in Southwest Washington. Last week end I was running back to the dock after a day of fishing. About 500 yards away my motor alarmed out a solid alarm. It means either High heat, SJs dont get hot, or low oil. I noticed my on engine reservoir was just a bit low, but had over 2 gallons in my main oil tank. I ran in on my kicker. Spent the last few days trouble shooting. I found exactly what the OP posted.I pulled my pickup tube in my main reservoir and it was completely plugged. Then I pulled it and started dumping the oil. It was pretty gelled, coagulated. I had to do a thorough cleaning of all components. I actually still had the empty gallon jug of Quicksilver oil and looked inside. It was a coagulated mess. I sent Quicksilver a message the other day and hoping to hear back really soon.

I am wondering what the OP heard from Mercury. It almost looks like its a possibility Mercury could have got a bad batch of oil from the supplier. I hear Citgo provides the oil for Mercury.

Hoping the OP could get me some more info off his oil jug, if he still has it. I'm going to try to include some pictures on here.

couple more pics. I tried straining the oil through some cheesecloth. This sat like that for over 10 minutes. It plugged the cheesecloth, barely trickled through.

The bottom picture is of the jug. The red writing on top shows the batch date. I am wondering how close it is to the OPs.

Quicksilver never responded to my email.
I just got off the phone with Mercury Marine. They wouldnt stand behind their product and the only response was 3 year old oil is too old for them to do anything about, even though it was purchased new last summer!

Yup I wasn't at all impressed with my answer either, and that is why I am switching to another oil. I will never buy their products again.
