Am I the only guy who has a zebco 888 for ease of use? If so, what other closed faced reels are there that can handle a heavy line and or fish.
I do utilize other reels but i was just wondering if I am an oddball for using the 888. Never had a problem with it.

Thank guys

don't know anything about the 888. you say it can handle heavy line and fish do you think it could handle a musky? i am curious because i hate bait casters and am going up to eagle lake this summer and i'm not sure my spinning rod can handle one. what is line capacity on the 888. sounds like it might be an alternative to a bait caster. thanks for any answer you can give me.

How is the retrieve on that reel? I think it's pretty low. You may want to look at the biggest garcia closed faced reel or the diawa. If zebco still makes the zebco 1 reel, thats another choice. I would want something with a higher speed retrieve on it. You can also try superlines, I put fireline on my youngest son's zebco prostaff closed face reel and it's been fine. I have checked the pin for wear and there has not been any so far.

My zebco 888 has 50pd power pro and I've caught numerous muskies with it. My garcia bait caster is nice, but for efficiency, its hard to beat the old 888. Its heavy duty and my father has one also that is (no kidding) 20 years old. they go for around 25 bucks maybe thirty. I also use a Abu Garcia 1275 model which they dont make anymore. Casts smooth with 50 pound tuff line on it. Anyways, i was just curious because i felt like an odd ball.

Just checked with the old man, He has 80pd power pro on it and it casts fine. If buying a reel for a weekend outing, you cant go wrong with the 888.

I utilize the 80 pd Power Pro and 50pd Tuff Line and never had a problem. As far as the newer ones im not sure. I know they make a pro staff that works great as well. Good Luck

Diawa GoldCast and SilverCast i think both make a Lefty modle. but i'm not 100% for sure.

the Zebco 733 Gold does for sure come in left modle. might a bit on the "small" side but big enogh for casting in WI. it can handle bucktails.

Abu Garic 1076 C Abumatic is like all Abumatic spin cast reels, you can very very easily take out the retrive handle and put it on the other side. It's reversable. it comes left handed in 20 seconds. id say big enough for musky fishing.

This has to be the #1 thread on the "pro's" page...this is about spincast reels!!!

Can the world figure out what is a LEFT handed vs RIGHT handed reel. I mean if your open face has the crank on the left side it is a right handed reel. If your bait caster has the crank on the left side it is a left handed reel. Most push button spin casters (average Zebco) has the crank on the left side but is considered a right handed reel. Go figure. I grew up using an open faced reel with the crank on the left so I casted with my right arm and reeled with my left. When I switched to mainly bait casters I bought lefties so I could continue to cast with my right and reel with my left. I watch the bass pros and they cast with their right then switch the rod over to their left so they can crank with their right. Why?
