I prefer steel leaders for lions share of my casting. Have typically used hard wire and 7 strand. Intent is to build some 49 strand leaders for this summer. I've typically used 90 lb seven strand for alot of things with no issue other than frequent replacement. We've been using 49 strand for sucker rigs and like it alright. In terms of leaders, I see more 49 strand offered in much heavier rating ie is there a weakness or thickness difference that would steer me from using 90lb 49 strand in same situation 90 lb seven strand usedI also see some use the protective sleeves on 49 strand. I'd prefer the thinnest wire without sacrificing strength or durability. Thanks in advance.

Jason, the 49 strand is fine for all your applications from suckers to casting. Very tieable, even the non coated. I use non coated in the 90 lb. Coated in the 65 and 40 lb. I m not sure you need to go to a heavier lb test, unless you’re experiencing breakage. Never a need for crimps with 49 strand!

Possibly, the seven strand 90lb being stiffer , may offer less fowling on baits during cast, for say, large plastics, as the 49 strand is So much more flexible. Like the 49 strand more on Crank applications.

I use "Leaders and Lures" 49 strand in both the 90lb and 130lb rating for Medusa's, Poseidon's, and Flaptails. the 90lb is little coated and the 130lb is just bare wire. You can tie both in knot and they come out un-kinked.

I crimp my own 90 and 175 49 strand leaders. Crimps mean you don’t get cut from the tag ends when knotted.
