When your fishing a weed bed, do you burn your lure high over the weeds, or brute force it through the weeds? Which way is more productive?

Yes, A May Weedbed is not June Weedbed and they get thicker as the season progresses till it starts to die off late Summer to early Fall. We can start off by fishing deep over low laying weeds then scattered Weeds then down right slop before they start to die off.

It depends. Dick Pearson designed a spinnerbait you can force through the weeds (especially cabbage or coontail) at their base, a technique he called “grinding” which can be very effective. Sometimes weeds are so thick you can’t do it effectively. Depending on weather, sky conditions, etc. going over the top can be more effective anyway, especially when the lure just ticks the top of the weeds. Contacting cover is a tried and true trigger.

I usually fish right in front of a weed bed parallel as I’ve not found a lure that doesn’t get full of weeds. Once you get weeds on a lure the fish will see it and never hit it. So if you can drag a lure threw and be completely weed free that will work.

I’d say try all ways…parallel, over tops, and through!

Fish do at times hit lures with weeds clung to them. Not real often but it does happen. Many times dragging in a lure with weeds is when you get the follow. Maybe because of more water displacement.

Weedless Spoons come through real well. Also, a Texas rigged 10” power worm, or Fandango are good choices to go weed less. Also, ripping a creature throw the weeds trigger strikes, and can be very weedless, especially with these power braided lines. 3/4 oz or 1 oz jigs punch through thick weeds nicely!

So many factors, no strait forward answer as is musky fishing

My rule of thumb is burn first, slow later. If ya got a hot n fast bite going, keep it going. If not, drop it into low gear. Weed contact is can be heck of a trigger. Something not mentioned yet is that the bass world has lots of large hollowbody swimbaits available. Rigged texsposed with an owner 12/0 (weighted or unweighted) ewg hook-u can bumper car pretty well through alot of veg.

One situation that I struggle with is where there is grass. Maybe one of those hollowbodied frogs would work in that situation?

I just tell myself that muskies don't have an affinity for grass and move on.

Spro,Renosky, and Zoom all make some pretty large frogs. The spro King dady casts like a Javelin, It goes everywhere with me and can be thrown by your musky rod. Problem is those big frogs need big angry fish to get a hook into em. If we're talking the thickest mat gross than yes a frog will go through it, even if the bait is weeded the fish can't see it anyways, weeded up though, just if your weeded up you'll loose the edge of weed hit. The Bucher spoon does pretty well skimming over thick mat, . U can also direct tie a heavy flouro leader and and setup a heavy bass punch jig-I've never caught musky yet doing this.

Below the water but still too thick and loose to burn spinner baits I really like the Picasso all terrain weedless inline spinner jig. The way they got blade and weed gaurds makes this thing a borderline tank for any veg.

One thing we found, as early as beginning of July if the weeds have slime on them we never seen a Muskie using them let lone catch one. Go find weeds that are slime free and catch Muskies.

A lure with trebles is generally going to get hung up pretty easily in any kind of moderate vegetation. I switch to single hooked lures when they start growing thicker to mitigate the issue. There's still fish in there, you just have to penetrate it.

As for hollow body frogs...as soon as one toothy annoying pike hits it, it'll slice open and take on water, rendering it useless.

Big spinnerbaits that utilize single hooks are great for thick weeds, like the Lubowski's. If there are big weed flat, that's the first thing that goes through them.

Good way to justify not spending time rigging something up.

In the Shield you got to do that for a lot of good looking stuff that might take some extra effort to fish correctly.

Weed fishing in general - muskies definitely not always on the outside edge. Kind of obvious really but when particularly appealing weedbeds are pressured hard , pays to get your trolling motor gummed up if necessary to fish thoroughly given most folks only do the edge and do it quickly. The biggest epiphany I had when switching from big pike to muskies is the understanding that a huge fish can be basically laying on shore - behind the weedbed even.

They only work when they float lol. When they get ripped, they take on water, and therefore they do not float. Simply physics.
