I have always had round reels and am excited to try a new low profile reel. I like throwing wtd topwater as often as possible and I use a 6'8" rod for that. That rod is exclusively for wtd lures from jackpots up to big weagles, home wreckers and rabskas. I always used Calcutta TE's for this rod. I'm struggling to choose the proper sized low profile reel to put on this rod as the larger sizes are a bit heavier. I would like to use a smaller size but don't want to go light / small here. The reels I'm considering are the Okuma Kimodo SS 463 vs the Okuma Kimodo SS 364. I'd consider a tranx 400 or tranx 500 but really don't want to spend that kind of money. Anyways, this question is more about what size for the application than what brand. Any ideas / suggestions would be appreciated.

i have one of the older Abu Revo Toros geared up to 6.4 on a LT jerk rod. Those types of baits cast a mile and if you are launching them out there its nice to have the line capacity

I have both Komodos you listed. Great reels. Only difference is line capacity. I do not think you could cast the entire spool on a 300 size. Not even close. But if you are worried about that - go with the 463 and forget about it.

I too have a dedicated wtd set up. 7' rod. Originally had my Curado 300 on it. I switched to a Revo Toro S. The reason I switched was simply the gear ratios on the two reels. I like to use a tight little march across the water, and my Curado was a high speed, and with the cadence I use, it was picking up the line a little too quickly, not leaving enough slack for the next snap. The switch to the lower geared S, did the trick. Of course this is totally up to how you work the lure. If you have the bait walk a little wider, or are more disciplined with your cranking hand, a high speed is fine. Bottom line is that both reels are sized just right. Just get the gear speed that works for you.

My bad got it confused with one of my spinning reel size. It’s a 463.

No worries. Thought you heard something I hadn't, haha. After you said this I did some searching for it, too! 463 and 471 are fantastic reels for the money.

Both Komodo's are good, strong reels. I use a 364 on a 7'6" 2-8 oz Jerkbait Rod, and it works great. It's a good size, weight, and retrieve speed for what I'm doing with jerks, glides, WTD's, etc. The Komodo 400's are a pretty good sized reel, but don't feel the added size, and weight is needed for this application. Just my opinion though.

Thanks for these answers everyone. Very helpful and I've made a decision on what okuma to go with on the walk the dog rod. I'd like to get one more (either kimodo 364 or 463) for throwing showgirls / jrs, mag dawgs, kickn minnows and the like etc. I feel like the 364 could pull this task off, but the 463 would have the category covered no sweat. I just wonder when casting double 8s for example if I'd get more distance with the 364 vs the 463.? I feel like there is some grey area when it comes to this mid-range lure category. It's not tiny bucktails and it's not ripping big rubber either... Whatya think? Thanks
