With the dog days upon us, I'm curious if most others avoid targeting musky as water temps start to get up there, and if so, at what temp do you hang it up?

Most of the lakes I'm fishing are still in the low to mid-70s. I think my high temp lake so far this year touched 76-77.

I understand that 80 is a generally accepted, if not universally followed, rule of thumb?

Now is the time to get way up into the shallow slop bays, away from the pleasure boaters, jet skiers, etc.. and break out the frogs for bass. It's a lot of fun, and you could wind up catching a real hawg. Kdawg

Quit musky fishing down here in Mid May, and put all the musky stuff up in mid June after my trip up to the Norhtwoods..

With water temps down here approaching 90, some of my cronies have resorted to fly fishing for carp.. I did that some years ago and it was a blast. Gonna head out next week, taking into account the forecast for severe weather..

There is a little city pond a couple miles from home I like to go make a few cast keep my mechanics in cheek, and always feels good to just let some lures fly, or if I get a new lure try it out or if I make a new bucktail take a look. It's been so hot I have not been there for weeks, got a couple new lures so I went over to the park and there's a bunch of trackers and trucks and stuff and they drained the pond. The last time I was there the water was low and green and I was thinking "boy they just don't keep this place up anymore" I guess there fixing it.

This is the time of year if you live close enough to take advantage of the great lakes. I'm on my way salmon fishing as I type this(not driving, lol). The fish are bigger this time of year, more high jumping steelhead and kings.

My local bass lake was 87* at surface and at the troller head.and muddy; air temp at the ramp was only 84*.
Even the basses didn't care for it. m

If I drive five miles the other way there's Barr Lake State Park it's a great place to see birds and wildlife (they even have nesting Bald Eagles) if you have a boat it's a good place to catch Walleye's, Wiper's, and Trout in the spring and yes it's has Tiger Muskies too. Half the lake is closed to fishing (a wildlife persevere) and you can't fish off the Dam. The lake is first and foremost a arriagation (sp)? lake is it can even get drawn down to dead pool. Last year at this time I went over there and the bay I used to fish was all mud with a layer of green algae. Fishing from shore you have a slightly better chance of catching a Tiger then if you cast in the parking lot.

Local lake hit 82 about mid-day last weekend. Was cooler in the morning. Got a nice 43" not long after hitting the lake. Skipped this weekend due to the 90's all week. Supposed to cool off into the 60's at night with 70's-low 80's as the highs this week so we'll see about the weekend. I'll take both musky and bass gear if I get out.

I’ll start to stop now. Water temps getting high. Plus they get a little harder to get for me off lures so it’s more baitfish and just letting them sit in some deep holes. Right now I’ll start fishing for cats and carp. I’ll sit in the shade and relax. The sun starts to beat me up in high temps and humidity.
