Subject: Gravel road to Northwest Angle

Has anyone been down the gravel road lately from Warroad to the Angle? 525 I think? Last time I did this stretch (2004) I swore I’d never do it again (boat and trailer peppered with rocks) and have launched in Morson and crossed the lake by boat to the Angle every trip since then. Leaving tomorrow and with all the floating debris, the 35 mile boat ride is less appealing but with a fiberglass boat the gravel road isn’t much better.

Thanks in advance

In 1999 I took a trip with some friends to northern Saskatchewan on a Pike/Walleye/Lake Trout outing it was a blast but 8 hours each way of dirt roads tough on the gear. We had four cars (SUVS/pick ups) and five boats. All aluminum boats we took my 14 foot row boat build a rack and it rode upside down on top of another boat. Wrapped parts of the boats in cardboard along with parts of the trailers. HARD ON THE GEAR! Never taken that trip again. Lot of fun but I can catch as many fish and of the same size right over the boarder.

I did it in 2017.and 2018 and it has a lot of washboard and definitely beats up your trailer. If you go slow you get passed a bunch and eat dust. I would still do that over boating across with a full load of people gear and supplies. Get a towtector or something similar. I know a guy who encased his trailer in cardboard.

Thanks for the feedback. Slow is the key but even at 10pm that washboard is brutal, already have some stress cracks on my fenders from a trip few years ago. And have a tow tector but still get dings and hear the pings. Buddy actually bought some flexible magnetic rolls that unwind that he sticks to his trailer which I thought was pretty creative to protect it.

I drive it a few times each week. It is in good shape for a gravel road. 50 MPH with a boat is doable. There will be rocks hitting the boat and trailer at any speed. More problems with deer than with gravel.

We usually travel at around 35 mph. Yes some pass you. If dry, get dust storm. If muddy,  slow down even more.

Some guys use the large ringed plastic downspout material. Cut slits, and slide on metal frame, or duct tape. We will wrap heavy duty industrial bags around front part of fiberglass fenders, with duct tape to protect the glass a bit…….and bag up lower units from dings, and dust getting in lower unit intakes.

 It’s a Pain for about 40 minutes;(

My old boat holds many scars from that road.

Your boat is lucky to be able to go up & down that road so often

Isn't the NW angle pretty much flooded out right now. I think most resorts are closed due to flooding.

I was wondering about this as well....I just saw some current pictures of the Angle inlet and some of the resorts.... many docks still under water or just barely above the water and they are being damaged further by waves on windy days.... I'm suppose to go to Flag Island on 07/01 but not sure how to tie off my boat to a dock that is just inches above the water.... I feel bad for these resorts!

Really sad. As tough as it is for those planning to be on there on vacation, resorts impacted are probably still recovering from the pandemic business interruption.

According to the weather app Flag got 1.95 inches of new rain in the past day.

The road is in great shape.
