Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I am wondering if anyone has spent the time to use access to make a musky log data base? If so would you be willing to e-mail me the format file? I tried playing with Access and it is way tougher then I have time to figure out. I know Excel pretty good, but I don't think it would work as well. I remember in years past how this was brought up on the boards and a few had one made but I wasn't ready to start a log on the computer at that time. Any help would be appreciated and I'd even be willing to trade a few of my weight sets for a quality log access system.

Posts: 1438 | Jo My wife is familiar with Access. She's going to take some time to try and show me how to use it for a few different things. If I can get something figured out for this too, I'll send it your way. I agree on Access though. Way to complicated to figure out on my own. Scott

Posts: 2378 | I put one together awhile back using Access. It was nice, but I was a little disappointed. I then put together one in Excel and wrote a few Macros to do sorting by categories. I like it. Simple and effective in my opinion. Here is what it looks like... Put whatever catogories you want and setup the macros do sort however you would like. Posts: 294 Location: Suspended | One option is to create a spread sheet with all your data in Excel and then import that into Access to manipulate the data to get what you want out of it. Import the Excel spread sheet as the main table in Access and then create reports to organize what you're looking for. Once its in Access you can add to the table and stop using Excel. I use Excel for my fishing log and Access for our club membership with over 1000 members. I just haven't had spare time to mess with the log in Access, yet! Edited by Webguy 2/19/2004 7:44 AM

Posts: 1438 | Jo Pike's waiting to tell you "It won't take long at all...at $1200 an hour". Just kidding Pike. I like the Excel idea imported to Access. Might look into that. Scott

Posts: 5874 | I played with one back in 93, Access 1.0. I had all sorts of stuff on it. Date, time, lake, water conditions, weather conditions, Lure/bait, fish caught, size, barometer, depth, structure, Pics, fishing partner with pics, and lots of other stuff. I could query anything I wanted. I did it as a project just to learn Access, and haven't opened it since. I should probably try to resurrect it.

Posts: 1938 Location: Black Creek, WI | Joe, I have settled on a simple Excel file for my logs. Back in college I did a semester project for stats class using my musky log and basically learned that the population of data is way to random to make any kind of conclusion (I had a pretty healthy database back then too with over 300 logged releases). I passed the class, despite the fact that the conclusion of my project was that statistics is a bunch of crapola and totally useless (ha ha). But, that project got me using excel instead of a hand-written log so at least something good came out of it. Anyway, if you are proficient at doing simple sorts and put a little thought into the organiziation/format of the spreadsheet.... excel can do a lot for you AND without the need for writing macros. Certainly more friendly than attempting to learn Access Databases in my opinion. Just my $0.02 worth.... Edited by jlong 2/19/2004 8:48 PM
