Let's just go out on a limb here, set some ground rules, and say the first one is silver and black. What color would you get for the other one?

I think the 2nd one would have a fluorescent blade (not sure which color though) and still think it might have a black tail.

Glad I’m not limited to 2 in real life, let’s start with that! Ha!

I really like White Blades and have confidence in them. With maybe some yellow/brown/black coloring in skirt if I could only have 2.

That color contrast would be the key I believe

Chartreuse Blades and Black skirt. Orange blade would be a close third.

1 chart blade, 1 gold blade + black skirt

I've transitioned to only throwing that color, black/black nickel, and black/nickel anyway, so not much of a limiter!

Copper blades would be a go to. I would actually get rid of the black/nickel combo. No confidence in that color combo (I may be the only muskie angler in the world to say that). I want a copper color and a chartreuse color.

Black Nickel is about my 5th choice, the fish see 30 of them every Friday and Saturday. They do love to follow them though.

I'm always blown away how there's a different hot pattern in my boat every summer. We throw three different pattern bucktails quite often to see what's preferred. The one that gets followed the most isn't always the one that gets eaten the most imo.

I'm still in the boat of color doesn't matter much. That said, I love a copper rainbow cowgirl. Laser shad cowgirl gets thrown a lot in my boat too. I think it's more about the flash and the fact that those two bucktails are worn down to the point of almost falling apart. They make a lot more noise than a new one. I think that's why they get bit so often.

One thing that's really interesting is that everyone has a different favorite color. What does that tell you? Probably doesn't matter much. It's just what you throw more often giving you confidence.

If the muskie can see it, everything else given as positive, it will get bit.

I have a Dadson that I've repainted the blades orange on a few times each of the last few summers. Like Kirby, I think it has more to do with the sound and vibration than anything else. There is hardly any of the black skirt material left on it either, but it continues to produce year after year.

I only know that some colors show up better in different water color, and light conditions. So in this regard, color can make a difference. I personally don't have a favorite color, just use what's effective based on trial and error. I do agree that vibration can often trump color.

I have to agree with Kirby. My best producers are on their last legs. Some have been replaced several times with the exact same color combination. It never fails that when the wire has been bent and straightened a bunch of times, the skirt is mostly gone, and right before the blades fall off is when they really shine. We're conditioned to believe that a shiny new whatever is better than the beat up old one, but that's not the case with blades.

If I only had two, I would choose one with a white skirt, one with a black skirt, and put one white, and one black blade, on both.

I think though that is part of the key to it. Getting them to see it. The reflection of the silver/gold, the brightness of the fluorescent, or the contrast of the black all help to get them to see it.

Based on my fishing last year one would be brass blades black skirt, the other would be matte black blades and black skirt. The bucktail I caught the most fish on was 8’s that I painted the blades with matte black rustoleum, paint actually held up way better than I expected. Who knows if the color made a difference or it was just the right time/place, but I don’t every really see guys throw a non shiny black blade so it’s something I’ll definitely do more of.

Black skirt orange blade. Particularly on cloudy days. Mostly because I can usually see it, plus it seems to create a contrast fish seem to be able to find and often respond to, regardless of water color/clarity.
On bright days, usually something bright with a lot of flash.

Depends on where I am. Stained chartreuse black. Clear nickel white.
