I have a 736 Powell Max Frog rod that's rated from 3/4 oz to 2 oz and up to 80lb braid. I was thinking about using this rod with 65lb braid and a 100lb fluorocarbon leader. Even though the Esox swim jig is 1 ounce, its actual weight is 2.8 ounces with a trailer. Would using this rod for this lure specifically kill the rod? I've never even came close to maxing out a rod's lure weight rating, so I want to be safe.

The rod is a little light, but should not fail.

Just be careful using too stout of a hook with a flexy rod. I'm guessing it'll cast it just fine. I use a bass swimbait rod for certain applications, I just try to balance it with smaller hook sizes.

Thanks everyone. I think I should be fine. The rod is ex-fast so it's not a flexy rod. I'll give it whirl in March and see what happens.

I threw swim jigs this year fishing the small tiger lakes around here and caught a couple fish on them. I didn’t throw the essox one but I used the dirty jigs 3/4 oz California swim jig which has an absolute gaff of a hook on it. I threw it some on a shimano expride 7’3” XH frog rod, some on a g loomis e6x 8’ heavy swimbait rod. On both of those rods I had lost fish and felt like I didn’t get quite enough hookset power. Switched to using a st croix 9’ mh actual musky rod and felt way better. I’m sure that rod will work but your not going to have the best hook sets and you will really limit yourself on the 8. Especially with a lure with a stout single hook and weed guard you really need a strong hookset, I felt way more comfortable with a real musky rod

If it helps, I modified my swim jigs by adding an additional 1/0 treble hook as a stinger for the back end of the trailers.
