Are people still changing out hooks and split rings on the new bulldawgs like they did in the “made in China” days? Just got an Ultra Dawg and a Monster Swimmin Dawg and want to know peoples educated opinions on changing out their 10/0’s for Mustad 3551 10/0’s, good idea or are their hooks good now? What about their split rings? Thanks in advance

MI hooks/split rings have been very good since becoming all American. The price of the baits these days have reflected some of those upgrades, but worth it to not change them out as soon as you get them

Not at all a concern. MI uses the highest quality components. Change wear items as needed.

Since the bad Hardware of the China Dawg days and the absolutely horrible Plasma Point hook era things have definitely gotten better. I still will change rings on Alpha Pounders to the Large Owner rings and will do so with the Ultra Dawg and the Super Mag swim dawg but that just a personal choice and overkill (which IMHO is underrated). The current hooks are actually the right size (not too small) and from my experience not much different than a 3551.

Thanks for the replies guys. I actually ended up putting 3551 Mustad 10/0's on the Ultra dawg along with #9 Rosco split rings to get the hook further away from the body of the lure. The shank of the 3551's are much longer than the ones that Musky Innovations provide with the Ultra Dawgs. So between the bigger rings and longer shanks I'm sure that the hooking percentage will be better with this combo. The Monster Swimmin Dawg looks like it will still hook well with the MI 10/0's and the smaller split rings they use due to more separation from the lure compared to the Ultra Dawg and the fact that the Monster Swimmin Dawg body is not as wide as the Ultra Dawg body.

could you post some pictures taken from different angles comparing the monster dawg with the ultra dawg?

would be interested to see the size differences.

anyone know the approx. years China Dawgs were produced? I have a lot of Dawgs from about 10 years ago that I hoped to fish in the next month. Might need to upgrade hooks and split rings.

Mag/Pounder/Ultra/2Pounder

I was wondering if the tail on the ultra was the same size as that on a pounder..

The last time I was in a room with the Ultra, there were no out of package pounders for comparison..

The Ultra Dawg tail is wider, and about an inch longer.

I have to look when I get home to see if the tails are different. I do know that even though the main body is heavier and wider, the total length of the Ultra Dawg is only a 1/4" longer than the Pounder.

Muskie Innovation never bothered to obtain the necessary molds to produce 2lb dawgs in the USA.

I do hope im wrong but since very few people are willing to buy and cast a 2lb dawg, musky innovations probably wiill never bother investing in and producing 2lb dawgs again.

But, if they do, i hope they make a shallow 2lb version

Why cast them when you can troll them?

When you get that cocky tough-guy youngster in your boat, break out the 2Lb'er. One day it could back-fire and a huge fish could chow it, win-win.

More likely, he'll get a backlash, and that two pounder is gone.
