Posts: 2089 | August 1988 on Rowan Lake. My best friend Paul and I were working a saddle area adjacent to some deep water in Brooks Bay. The fish followed his red/flame Eagle Tail. This fish was a MUTANT!!!Anybody know what the beam was on those 16' Lunds? The fish was seen on both sides of the boat AT THE SAME TIME!Much bigger than anything I'd ever seen or have seen since.Slowly slid out of sight never to be seen again.(at least not by us that week).A truly incredible experience. I still lie awake at night thinking of that fish. They do exist. Steve

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Steve- we are haunted by similar fish w/ similar circumstances, i.e., she was under the boat & I could see the head & tail at the same time.. How big? Take a look at the latest Muskie Hunter article by Larry Ramsell- "Just How Big Do They Get?". The picture across pages 64-65 says it all. I've seen two separate fish in this class in Canada on my lake X & Y. The first one was definitely bigger than the one in the photo! Al Warner "All Water is Zalt Water"

I was ice fishing Long lake in Waushara Co. last winter, there was no snow cover and the ice was like walking on a pain of glass...gin clear. Just before dusk I saw a shadow move out of deeper water and pretty close to my furthest tip-up...I slowly walked up to it and saw what could have easily been a 60" fish. Long Lake is a DNR rearing "pond" for spotted musky and does'nt have an open season.

Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | Two days in a row on the Winnipeg River system near Minaki, Ont., "Shamu the Killer Whale" came in once following a Slammer Jerkbait (not available by retail) as the bait was rising up to the surface from about 5' down. The giant was coming vertically with her mouth open. She slammed her jaws shut but had not allowed for the rate of rise of the bait. The monster slowly turned and swam back down from where she had come, ignoring all my finest figure eights as I buried the rod into the water up to my elbows. The closest to her size that I have seen mounted is in the Holiday Bar on North Twin Lake near Phelps, WI. It is posted as 48 lbs. 10 oz. at the time of its harvesting. I will see "Shamu" for the rest of my days! Edited by Steve Van Lieshout 2/11/2004 10:03 AM

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | It really is hard to tell how big the real "big girls" are that you happen across because you really don't have anything to compare them too (at least I don't). I saw (on the end of a sucker rig) a very large fish this fall I couldn't guess the size at other than bigger than any I have caught before. Sworrall saw the same fish several times (and has caught fish in that size range) so I trust his estimate on it, but to me it was in the really big category. I had similar occurences fishing with Steve Herbeck on Eagle. I saw some fish fishing with him that looked like some freakish thing from below a nuclear reactor discharge. If I was on my own I would have no clue how big they were, he said they were at least 45#'s. All I know is that they were big, and it seemed as if the fish in Wisconsin this fall was in the same size class. Sorry, no world records here.

Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | Once the fish reach the "oh my god!" size, girth is perhaps the toughest dimension to judge on a fish in the water. From a weight pespective each inch of girth and any recent meal can have huge effects upon a fish's ability to rank up with world record size. There are so few muskies that can attain those rarified dimensions, most all of us have so few opportunities to see fish like we are discussing to be credible in our judgments, and our memories over time tend to allow those few really big fish to grow with each time we tell our story, a true world record fish would be nearly impossible for us to comprehend when we looked at it.

Posts: 1906 Location: Oconto Falls, WI | I too once had an occurance like Jonesi had. It all happen on a lake in WI. I was over 60' of water, and wouldn't you know it I wasn't musky fishing at the time. I decided to take a break and try and catch myself some Lake Trout and Ciscos by vertical jigging a swedish pimple when my life changed forever. One of my brother-in-laws told me to look over the side of the boat, and there she was. Not 10' down lurked a fish that appeared to stretch the whole width of my dad's 15' boat! We all just sat there in awe as she continued to slowly swim away, and never to be seen again by us. From that day forth I fished suspended muskies in hopes of seeing her again! I will not venture to guess at how long she was because I have never caught a fish of that acliber before, but I do know it was a freak!
