The smaller the netting the bigger the tangle.

The bigger the netting, the more you'll split the fish's fins. Pick your poison.

I have a few different nets, haven't found the perfect netting. I get tired of seeing mangled fins on fish, so I'll go to smaller netting...eventually, you get one wrapped up tight in it. I'm pretty quick to cut hooks, so this isn't such a huge problem. I've even cut several nets just to get the fish back quickly.

Agree with Ninja.
It's awful seeing all the bloody split fin pics with the 2" netting.

I do get that but trying to get a Musky that cocooned itself with it's head out in f the water in the 1" mesh also creates issues for the fish.

I'm still conflicted.. there really wasn't a whole lot of extra handling involved cutting the hooks..

I hear ya. I have had such bad experiences with the small light netting that I opted for the large, coated, knotless type. For sure we have bloodied a few fins, but we minimize the damage by minimizing the time in the net, and the fish swim away healthy. The light nets can tangle so badly with a hot fish it can take a long time even cutting everything.

I'll agree with Todd. Lassoed fish in a small mesh net are trouble. Do you guys really think tails don't get split in a one inch net? Any netted fish has a good chance of getting it's fins split. Water release em all of that's your concern. Some fish behave in the net and other are naughty.

If I had a dollar for every musky that looked like that in the net, I would have to borrow a dollar.

I would say this is very dependent on how much energy the fish still has...

Those who try and net as fast as possible, the larger mesh may be better for less tangle.

Fishing alone, smaller mesh might be a better way as the fish might (tongue in cheek here) be played out a touch more and will not thrash and roll in the netting as much...

I found the big heavy rubber coated is very very tough to work with in windy conditions, especially when fishing alone.

I'd be more in tune to playing the fish out just a touch more, a smooth dip into a 1" mesh net, and if it rolls, start cutting hooks. Hooks are cheap and easy to replace...

Last trip to lotw we had a new fin saver 1"mesh bag. Never in my life did we spend more time untangling fish in the bag. It was embarrassing. Water released the rest of the smaller fish. To each his own. Personally we will never buy a another tight meshed net again. Personally most fish get unpinned at the boat.
Do you really need more pics of none trophy muskies. Those tourist fish that are caught every couple weeks will have some split fins, but when you have them twisted tight in the bag they're struggling as much as you are.
Don't lift the bag!!!!!! Leave it on the water!!!!!
