Well it seems like a 115 is the route I am looking at
Any thoughts on which one?
I was thinking Yamaha, but I think the Suzuki might be better as it shares the same block as the 140?
But I am open to any brand, so ....

Thanks
Dave

Probably can't go wrong with either. Have no personal experience with Yamaha, but know they are great motors. Had a great experience with Suzuki.

I think I would choose based on where you can get it serviced. Neighbor has a Yamaha on his pontoon and is having an intermittent issue with it. No local dealer, has to haul it 60 miles to nearest dealer. On the other hand, the dealer that sold my Suzuki new on a Lund Pro V no longer carries Suzuki and won't even winterize them, so I drive 35 miles for service. The story was that they liked the Suzuki, but when Lund was purchased by Mercury's parent company, they switched to Mercury only. At least during the warranty period, you will need to have service done by an authorized dealer.

At least a good look at Honda is a good suggestion.

If you don't mind believing what you read on the Internet, here is a good source forum on outboards. m

Clammer - I think you said you're around St. Germain so based on that I'd lean Suzuki. (The 90, 115, and 140 all share the same block).

Northern Edge is the state's largest Suzi dealer - that'd be worth something to me -, they're just a half hour from you, their motor will probably cost less than the Yamaha, you get Suzi's new five year warranty, and the motor uses a chain vs. a belt which will have to be replaced at some point.

Plus I'll offer reckless speculation and say you can get the 140hp for less than $1,500 more than the 115 which will be tempting.

With supply chain issues, it's hard to say who will have what, however. Honda makes a good motor but they are heavier than others. They're coming out with a new 140hp, so maybe you can find a deal on a remaining 135, but I can't speak to if there's a dealer close to you or not for service. Cincy raises a good point about Honda parts availability.

Will be interested to hear how things turn out for you.

Thanks all! Many thanks. I will check for which other dealers are near.

Last year I was in the same "boat" so to speak. My 1997 Evinrude 115 decided it was time to give me problems. I looked at Yamaha, but found out I would need to wait a several months to get one, and they were several hundred dollars more than a Suzuki. I toyed with an ETEC, but was afraid of parts issues down the road. I spoke with a couple guides in the Eagle River area, and they told me that the Suzuki is a very good outboard. I stopped at Northern Edge in Land O Lakes, they were very easy and straight forward, the price was fair, and they did a very nice job rigging the new engine. With 1 year of use, I am very happy with my Suzuki, it is quiet, good on gas and trolls down nicely. Hope this helps. Good Luck

I talked with Northern Edge as well, seem like very good people to work with.
They even have 115's in stock!
So, I think I am going that route.
Thanks again everyone

Good folks. They do the annual maintenance on my Suzukis. Had them install a Lowrance SI and got a look at their shop. Every tool was in its place, everything was clean. I commented on the shop and the owner just smiled and said that everyone who worked there should be able to find every tool in its spot without having to look around. (My dad was a mechanic and one of his pet peeves was when shared shop tools were not in place)

Keith had a 115 Merc on his 1775 Lund and loved it. The boat ran around 40 top end and had plenty of power.

A lot of vitriol here. For what it's worth, Merc doesn't make a 115 Verado. I have run Mercury motors for 35 years from the old cold-blooded 2-strokes to Optis to the 150 Verado I have now. Like other motors mentioned here, if you take care of them, they run. If you have a local dealer for whatever brand you decide on, that's a big plus.

In my opinion I would not buy a certain brand, but they are all basically the same so it doesn't matter. Do whatever your gut tells you, can't go wrong.

3lksmusky what sort of performance are you seeing with the new Suzuki on your rig? I sent you a PM as well.

I see my post regarding a certain engine manufacture got deleted, noted and disappointing to say the least. Its an opinion informed by working in the industry, but last thing I'd want to do is mess with your bag so I understand.

Suzuki makes an excellent platform as well, just going to run into random wear and tear issues like o rings and other rubber bits. But the block and gaskets are solid as yamaha or honda.

You know the rules here. We know the data on industry outboard warranty, and there's little difference between brands for reliability at this time. I have owned one brand mentioned here, and had a rash of issues. I sold that brand to dealers, and set up pro staff deals. I sold one to my son, too. He had several problems with it. I sold a couple to pro staffers for the boat brand I was selling at the time. They both had issues. Both got them fixed fast and right. That doesn't make the brand bad, it means they had a warranty issue. My motor was fixed a couple times and eventually ran reliably. Great motor, good service.

I have 48 years in the industry and am still working with several brands. Every day. Doesn't make it OK for me to tell anyone not to buy a well-known, reliable brand here just because I prefer another. I just advise what brand I like and why.

It SPECIFICALLY states in our permissions we have published multiple times what's allowed here and why. And it has absolutely nothing to do with you. But... you already know that.

It also states that if you go ahead and ignore the permissions we have had in place unwaveringly for 21 years, and complain about the inevitable, that will be deleted too. But, you already know that as well.

If you can afford it Mercury makes the best performing engine, no doubt. But there's a reason they use mules instead of thoroughbreds to move stuff across mountain passes. That I feel is an apt comparison.

The HP being discussed is a 115, not a 350. I have a 60. Sips fuel, runs my 1625 dual console Lund Fury with two anglers at 30 MPH. Starts every time, planes the boat well with a tin 4 blade prop, and has plenty of low-end power. Must be a hybrid horse/mule.

I run a 115 mercury and my dad a 115 yamaha, both 4 strokes. We have both had very good luck with them. Anymore it has kind of become the proverbial Ford vs Chevy. As others have said pick the one that is going to give you the closest good service center incase you should ever need it.

I have a 115 Merc Pro XS on my 1775 Lund Impact (new in 2018). Quite a few hours on it to this point, as it gets used most weekends May-late October. Love the performance and dependability so far.

I have a 2021 Competitor 175 fsx with a 115 Yamaha SHO vmax. I’ve been very impressed with the engine so far. Seems to be fuel efficient, very quiet at idle, but sounds healthy at the top end. Seems to have power from off idle to top rpms. Starts like a car and I can’t believe how oder free it is (last motor was a 1997 Mariner 2 stroke). I’ve read a few reports that it makes more than 115 hp but who really knows???
To be perfectly honest I would have also been perfectly happy with a Mercury XPS.

I'm running a Merc 115 Pro on my 1775 Impact. Boat runs low to mid 40s with all the power I need. I fished Erie with it the last 2 years with no problems. All the power needed to run big water. Great on in land as well . Not bad on fuel either. I had a choice between Merc and Honda from the Lund dealer. Honda was considered but I got a 5yr warranty on the Merc. That, along with there being only one Honda dealer for service in my area vs 6 or 8 for Merc was what tipped the scale to Merc for me.
