| I have a 16.5' tiller than I am seriously considering selling. I am looking at new boats up to 18' with a beam of around 90".
I plan to use the boat 60% of the time trolling big water (Lake St. Clair) and the rest of the time either casting LSC in more protected areas or fishing smaller bodies of water. When fishing LSC, it is not uncommon to make 20-30 min. runs with my current boat.
Can't make up my mind on tiller vs. console. For smaller water or LSC on calmer days, no question I prefer a tiller.
What do you guys think? Again, keep in mind I will do quite a bit of trolling in 1-3 footers. I appreciate your thoughts. |

| I don't troll but I can definitely tell you that I for one prefer a console boat when running big water. I like the operator's position in the boat, I like having a windshield and I like having one hand on the wheel and the other on the throttle/trim switch.
If you are doing a lot of precision trolling, a tiller is where it's at, but I'd still rather have the console.

| I recommend a console too. If you are running big water, a tiller is not the best. As far as trolling, I use a motor bar between my 225 and my 9.9 and I can run a breakline just as good as I did when I ran my old tillers.
A console will give you more control and a better ride in rough water. |

| Hiya,
Like just about everything with boats, it's a conpramise some way or another.
I went to a console this year after 12 years in a tiller. For longer runs on bigger water, the comfort and lack of left arm fatigue was worth it, not to mention being able to hide behind the windshield.
For trolling, depends on the type of trolling. If it's tight contour trolling, a tiller wins - they are just plain faster to respond wich matters when you are trying to stay off the rocks. For open water, a console does fine. That having been said, I troll with my console, and do just fine. Know several others that do so as well. Just have to stay on your toes...
For St. Clair, my money would be on a console...
Cheers,
