Posts: 1770 | Little Fork River (with Muskie) feeds into the Rainy River which feeds into LOTW which has Muskie. So, I would expect the Rainy River to contain Muskies but I have never heard anything. So, why aren't they in there? Is it people just aren't talking about them? Hmmmm........................

Posts: 1482 Location: Brighton CO. | I googled Rainy River and from articles I read there are Muskie in the upper section of the river. maybe folks catching Muskie are tight lipped! Or there's just so many places fish in that part of the country.

Posts: 1770 | By upper you mean towards the dam in International Falls? I haven't heard that, I'll need to ask around.

Posts: 2045 | Well just like the southern section of LoTW, there is probably just too few to target… Four mile bay gets plenty of pressure for walleye and pike … not many muskie caught….probably the best section to try would be between where the big fork and little fork dump it…. Really low right now so maybe some of those small river skis are migrating to more water… never know till ya try. ?? Edited by IAJustin 9/19/2021 7:48 AM

My sister and brother in law were just here for a visit. He worked in International Falls for 4 years and lived on Rainy Lake. I asked him about the river and while he fished it for walleye, he said that the few musky fishermen he knew in the area would go up to Lake of the Woods to fish but did have a vague memory of guys fishing for musky where the Rainy entered the lake. He felt there were probably musky in the river but not in high numbers.

Posts: 2356 Location: Chisholm, MN | It’s not typical muskie habitat but I know of a few that have been caught over the years. They’ve all been small and caught by the walleye guys in the spring. I’m sure there are a few spots that hold fish somewhat consistently. I’ve always wanted to try it but the chances of striking out after a two hour drive are too high for me. It’s just like the southern portion of lake of the woods. Not many muskies but they exist.

Posts: 358 | The Rainy River just doesn't support a lot of resident fish of any kind. There are for sure some muskies in there. I talk to someone every year who catches one. There are also small pods of smallmouth but they dont seem to expand either. There is not a lot of vegetation in the river so not sure it has a diverse enough ecosystem. The Red River on the other hand does have some nice ones in it...oops maybe should not have said that lol
