Location: michigan | Sorry the picture doesn't do the color justice (had to scan it I didn't have the digital camera with me). This fish had purple hue to it, similar to a marlin. The fish fought hard and jumped several times. I have caught many but never saw anything close to the color of this.

Location: DES MOINES, IOWA | Not quite, but we took 7 of the darkest Muskies, I have ever seen this year from one area.Could hardly see the stripes.Came from a river.Working on being able to send pictures,would love to show you one of these. |

Location: michigan | This fish was taken (and released) from lake st clair in july. Every fish I have caught here is bright silver spotted/striped. The fish was 54" and on the skinny side but seemed very healthy It knocked my glasses of on the release. |

Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | Maybe it's DAD was a King? It has the same color as some salmon from lake Michigan. I've seen some dark fish from stained water but never like that. Nice picture and great catch.

That is a dark one. I'm fishing the same clear water as you capt and every fish has been bright and silvery. I wonder if it was an oldie. |

| More than likely this fish had/has some type of problem with its eyes or eyesight. Fish frequently turn dark in pigment when eye problems/blindness or partial blindness occur. I have seen several extremely dark bass and one muskie with colors somewhat similar to this. When I questioned an aquatic biologist about it they responded with my previous explanation. |

Location: Appleton, WI | Hi Captain Frank. Did you happen to catch it deep in some milfoil or a milfoil edge? I had caught a pike that was very black and extremely skinny last year. It was caught deep into the milfoil during the heat of summer. I've heard that the water around milfoil gets pretty warm. So I was thinking the fish was skinny due to the higher water temps....(speeding up the metabolism). I know that smallies tend to turn darker when they are mad, maybe the same happenend with it. Just a few thoughts.Pretty intertesting color pattern no doubt.

| Check out the April/May 2003 In-Fisherman--P14 there's an article by Ralph Manns on Bass coloration and pigmentation in response to their environment--not muskies, but maybe food for thought. |

| There is a different strain of fish that come from Shopac Lake in northern MN as someone else referred to.
They do have a purple and colorful tint to them.
The MN DNR used to stock them in other lakes, but stopped because they don't get nearly as large as the Leech Lake strain.
