Muskie 101, if you were using a standard musky spinning rod, 8ft. or longer, I would recommend a 5000 Battle. Because of your rod choice, a 4000 Battle would be your best option. Kdawg

M101, Why do need such heavy line? 50lb. is what I would max out on a spinning outfit. Kdawg

I pretty much agree with this. I had 100lb braid on a daiwa bg 8000 and must say it was complete overkill. 50lb with that rod would get better casting distance and accuracy. What size baits are you planning on throwing with it? I tossed lures between mepps musky killers up to a bulldawg with my setup and had no issues but have since bought some more baitcasting gear so I haven't used that setup since. I did take off that 100lb braid though and will probably be putting 25lb mono on for a catfish setup ( what it actually is ) big cat fever rod. It will also double as a striper combo if I ever head to raystown lake.

As far as reel size the 8000 I have is so much of an overkill it isn't funny. 4000 or 5000 size would be better suited like was said earlier. I would advise however not to use max Quatro thinking that getting more line capacity is better! I've heard and seen videos of people breaking off while frog fishing for bass with 65lb. If It can't withstand that shock then it's not something I would use. I don't know if that was your plan or not but this may help you or somebody else or even some skies from breakoffs. Good luck and tight lines

Edit; daiwa j braid grand has been on sale lately for like half price ( 300yds like $20 instead of $40 ) and is 8 carrier instead of 4. It's alot smoother and slicker as well. Jsyk

How much line could it hold with the line being 100lb power pro

I don't know the penn's. Reel specs but powerpro 100lb is like 25lb mono. See what the reel specs are and subtract 10%. Most reels seem to over estimate what they really hold. The braid I used was reaction tackle and it was 4 carriers and much thicker than other braids. It was also incredibly strong! More like survival rope than fishing line lol.. My bg8000 said something to the effects of 330yds. It came nowhere near that, I had almost a half spool left when it was bubbled over full.

I've got a Penn Battle 3 5000. Dude that thing is BIG. I'll post some comparison photos later in the day.

Right to left: Shakespeare Platinum 5000, Prorex 400, Penn Battle 3 5000, 12oz soda, Favorite Jackhammer 2500.

I agree with the others, your rod I imagine is rated for what 6oz max? I honestly don't know, just assuming. So your probably not throwing Pounders, 1 less reason to need 100lb. Secondly, depending on what style of baits and retrieves your doing- that heavy 5000 is going to fry your wrists quick if your doing alot of twitching and popping during retrieves.

Fourthly I used to do the same thing; Run more affordable spinning setups and huck big baits with em on 80lb. Maybe it was just my reels-but loops and birds nests became a regular issue. I started with 65lb nearly knot free, switched to 80lb Spider Wire Invisibraid because it was a steal at a garage sale, than regretted the swap almost instantly. My only theory is that when you move up to those large diameter lines, because the line has much more mass itself it seems to maintain its helical momentum as it comes off the spool than u get split second stalls at the eyelets which kills your range and causes loops. The other problem I have with it is during jerk stop retrieves, if your slacked enough your line will sag too much between the last eyelet and bail and it'll loop itself on the body of reel. These problems don't happen every cast of course but they did happen annoyingly regularly.

I used to get these Korean spinning reels for $20 off Ebay and they'd last about 2years. A 4000 series and 65lb 832 on a 7' Heavy Sojourn (3oz max) worked great. Plenty of smallies, Bowfin, large mouth, pike, and 3 Muskies (all sub 40") caught on that setup. Never did I get broke off.
