Now is a great time to give your main high-use reels a complete clean and lube. If you don't want to take the time for a complete clean and lube, at least clean and oil the worm gear and line guide groove, if your reel has one. The worm gear will usually be the first thing to go due to the build up of gunk. Oil bearings and lightly grease gears. This simple attention to your reels will not only prolong the life of your reel, it will significantly reduce the number of breakdowns that you will experience between now and the end of the season. Also, remember to back-off on your drags when not being used. Check that line too. If it is appearing fuzzy or worn, replace or at the bare minimum, reverse the line on the reel. Now, go stick a pig.
