Posts: 269 Location: Oregon, WI | I have a yamaha 9.9 kicker that stops 'peeing' periodically. It'll work for awhile then starts sputtering like it's clogged then stop completely at times. Sticking a small wire in the pee hole usually brings it back to life for a short while. I've replaced the impeller and thermostat already and flushed it many times to no avail. Any ideas?

If there is an orifice at the end of the tell tale, you may try to flush it on the hose with the orifice removed. Otherwise you will have to flush the whole thing. Prv, thermostat, lower unit, water jacket until it is clear

Posts: 20179 Location: oswego, il | What did the old impeller look like? Was it intact? I had a buddy who used to start his kicker at 3/4 throttle and pieces of his impeller ended up lodging in the block causing it to overheat. Not saying you start your motor that way but it's possible you have impeller pieces lodged in the motor. I don't however suggest getting your prostate checked at a marine dealer. They say you won't smell like marine grease for days but you will.

I had an older Merc 2 stroke that stopped peeing but I knew the impeller had few hours on it. Turned out that while sitting on the trailer, some type of insect got in the rubber tube where the tell tale comes out from and plugged it with mud. Had to take a piece of wire and pull that out.

Ditto. My 50 hp Merc 2-str also gets clogged sometimes with milfoil debris, etc. I keep a 2 ft. length of 0.8 mm string trimmer line in the boat, run it in the pee hole as far as it will go, and then rotate it a few times. The nylon is less likely than wire to hurt anything, but is still stiff enough to be pushed in very easily and go through a spider egg sac or mud clog or milfoil chunk. Posts: 426 | I had an older 9.9 that would clog up on occasion. I the dealer said to try and blow it out with an air compressor through the water out let. It worked. I used about 50lbs of pressure. Dealer also said as long as the engine is not over heating no damage would be caused bt having the discharged clogged. Edited by 7ovr50 7/15/2021 7:14 AM

Posts: 269 Location: Oregon, WI | The old impeller looked OK. This has been going on for a couple of years now. It's a 2013. Impeller was replaced the first time and second time for this problem. Didn't fix it either time. There is a hose attachment and when garden hose attached seems UN-obstructed.
