10% FEDERAL TAX on lures!!!
That is one thing that I see many folks in the small garage musky tackle industry not paying...and they should by law. The big garage musky tackle manufactuers pay it because its the law. There is so many costs occured to the manufactuers its nuts. I dont complain when I buy a bait at $20. I would complain more if I was not able to buy any lures, because they all went out of business due to costs. |

| The really big surprise for me on lures and many other non essential items today is how despite rapidly rising prices, demand has not dropped much. Seems contrary to basic economic theory.
Talked to one of the sales guys at The Musky Shop about that last fall. He shook his head about some of the prices but said they really were not seeing a drop in demand |

| This last winter I've backed off on my lure buying big time, and last year I bought a some of out of production stuff on E-bay.
Most trips I come well stocked for the season and type of water and leave 99.99999 stuff at home. A couple years ago I bought a bucktail maker and at this point I need another bucktail like I need another hole in my head. Now this fall I'm taking a trip with a friend we'll be fishing with a guide everyday and using this lures! Sure I'll take a flat box with some old goodies. (depending on what is right for the situation) If I find the right lure it my never leave my rod tip for the four day's of fishing.
Do I have regrets on all the stuff I bought? NO It's helped to keep the people of the Northwoods employed. And there are a lot great lures that are off the market. And thank God I bought all those Raiders in the day. (1989-2000) |

| All I can say is I'm kind of glad I outfitted myself with musky gear back in 2005 - 2006. I can't imagine what it would cost to buy all that stuff today. Granted a lot of it turned out to be junk, but some of the staples in my arsenal are still the same lures from 15 - 20 years ago. Also have quite a few lures that are good producers that you can't buy anymore. |

| Went to the MN Muskie Expo today. Whoo boy, I'm glad I already have everything I need. It seems across the board, prices are up, but it did seem that there are more booths of what you might call "premium" baits, as well. Relatively speaking, there seemed to be good deals, as the show pricing is better than what recent retail has been, and is going to be. Even for premium baits. I did pick up a replacement bait for $25, for one that has seen better days. Also picked up a complementary color of a bait that I have had success with, the last couple years, for $23. Last pick up, was a new version of a bait I like. That one was $20. I think at my first Expo, I got three times the number of baits for the same outlay. |

Just prototyping can get costly. I can knock out a new basic crank bait or jerk bait design fairly easily/cost effective but what fun fun is making something that moves/looks like everything else. I have over 20years building lures and lots of screwing up to reach where I am now. If you take the hybrid project I have been working on for the last 2 years. I have about 3k(maybe more) invested into this project and the first complete lure won’t be ready till May at the earliest
Lots of other good points were brought up early in this thread
If it was a simple get rich thing everyone would do it. Sadly I don’t think I will be giving up my main job as a heavy equipment operator anytime soon. If I didn’t enjoy building baits and the satisfaction I get catching fish on something I made I would have gave it up long ago |

With production stuff It could very well be partly due to supply costs and availability increases along with labor issues. The last 2 years of a mess this world went through definitely helped make everything more costly
But I don’t doubt part of it could be the good old “ hey that company is charging X and people are buying what can we get away with?” Theory being tested out too

Have you seen boat prices lately? The boat I bought new in 2019 is $15,500 more expensive now. I don’t think people realize how bad inflation has gotten in the last 2 years.

| After the painful realization that I was going to have to shell out some serious coin on tires, brakes, and an exhaust system for my truck (Silverado 2500 HD) I thought about trading it in and just getting the same truck only new... After pricing it out at nearly $80,000, I've changed my mind. |

| It is interesting to look back 19 years, and see people mentioning basically the same things we are talking about today. Not only talking about bait prices, but also mentioned really high prices for trucks and boats. The more things change, the more they stay the same, I guess. |

Not just cars/boats. I bought a v-plow for my utv last fall and it cost almost 20% more than when I priced them the year before. Looked at another, similar plow and it was the same thing. That dealer worried that they were getting too expensive for a lot of people. Both manufacturers blamed steel and transportation costs for the increase. |

| In response to question about most expensive lures in my box ... I probably have 4 in the $60+ range but nothing higher than $70. All bought in the last 5 years. They are premium cranks and topwater baits. I have been happy with all 4 and they have been well worth the investment. |

| Maybe it's time to open up a lure repair and modification shop. Guys at the end of the season could box up their broken baits, or baits that could be re-conditioned with new hooks and rings,paint etc. Instead of shelling out 30-100 bucks or more for new baits, fix up your old ones for a fraction of the cost. Not singling out a particular manufacturer, but a Suick was selling for $15 in 2006, and now they're pushing $30 for the basic models.
That said, I'm sure they were agonizing over each price increase.. and I get it.. |
