Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Over-rated vs. Under-rated

Subject: Over-rated vs. Under-rated

I was curious how everyone felt about certain style baits. By explaining which ones they, thought are over-rated, and which ones that may be under-rated. I imagine everyone will most definitely have different responses to this question since it most often dictates the type of water that your fishing and your techniques. (Maybe I should rephase this comment by saying in your opinion what lure type do you think you may over-rate and under-rate in "your box".)

First off, I feel that gliders are over-rated for their effectiveness. I've tossed these proportionately more than any other bait, and have had less hookups with.

The under-rated bate in my box would be the bucktail. I may toss the bait the least, but have the most success with it.

Now the reason for such a contradiction is: that I enjoy throwing gliders/jerkbaits more than throwing a monotonous bucktaill all day. Bucktails can be a little less fun throwing all day because it's a no brainer at times, but gliders can be as mesmerizing to you as it can be to the fish. Maybe that's why their so popular.

I can see a musky saying to itself:"Man, that ugly, boring bucktail needs to be put out of it's misery. I think I'll whack it." while chasing a glider it says"Wow Man, that baits got me tripping, it's almost too pretty to hit."(...yeah, yeah I can hear it now...Krappie's losing his mind by giving a fish humanistic traits. Oh well, whatever it takes to make myself feel better.LOL)

catch ya later,
Krappie

Wow, there are so many to choose from. I will pick two.

Overrated. Power pro. Everybody likes it but it does not work for me. It does not matter what diameter I use. I get wet and it breaks on a backlash.

Underrated. Planer board trolling. Very few people do it and it always out produces the lures behind the boat. I have even caught more fish on the outside planer board than I have behind the boat.

Like the power pro + tried it on saltwater for the first time last week + it did great! Do agree w/ Todd on the planer boards....been using them for a long time here + you can really work a breakline/deeper water at the same time....also you can speed up some in a turn + swing a bait right up on a ledge or small point....they can also be used from the bank on rivers. As far as baits go I think smaller baits are often underrated to a degree maybe? [:sun:]

Over-rated Jigs - Can only seem to catch pike on them.

Under-rated Surfacebaits - I should use them more, I seem to pay to much attention to surface temp. and not weather patterns. I see a lot of fish caught early and late in the year on topwater when I think the water is to cold.

P.S. Planner boards and flat lines - dead even!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the DEEP Diving Crankbait is the most underated of them all. They are so versatile that they can be fished from the slop, open water, and everywhere in between. They can be burned, walked, twitched, trolled, and much much more.

I'm probably going to get hammered on this one, but I think the SUICK is the most overrated bait. Yes, there is no denying it catches a boat load of fish... but there are better baits out there that just haven't obtained the reputation of the suick. I have replaced ALL of my Suicks with "similar" lures and have not seen a decline in my success rate.

I think most lures are both under and over rated. One man's poison is another's man's high. Why do you think we have lure swaps?
I have lures that just plain suck and one day I take them out of the box and start catching fish like hell with them. Then you got others that have always been great then stop producing. You can have two lures of the same color and one stinks and the other produces. Sometimes one lure is great in one lake and not so great in another. One can produce on Monday and not on Wednesday.
In other words what I am saying is that most lures out on the market had to be productive before anyone would put a lot of money out for the production.

Just think of the hockey stick lure, man it produces and only cost a buck or two to make.[:sun:]

I think we were able to catch fish in the years past and if some of us are catching more fish now then before it's not because of all the new lures we have in our boxes but more because of our experience.[:sun:]

I agrea with trophymuskie, I never caught a pike on a salmo perch 12cm crankbait in that orange perch-color. My mate''s one is chewed up. I have done super on swim whizz plugs, he hasn''t caught a thing on it. I must say, I much prefer the older baits over the new ones. A lot of new ones are just copies or slightly different versions of the oldies. Sometimes there are some who are worth the effort of getting it, like a phantom.

underrated: suspending jerkbaits/crankbaits
overrated: new grandma''s (to choose one of the long list I made)

The most overrater are surface baits. They haven't done crap for me. Underrated, the rapala J-13. Its a jointed crankbait of about 5-6 inches and is deadly when trolled.

...most over rated : the Suick. I know lots of people love em' and they have been around for a long time but not one of my favorites

Underrated: the Bullgawg, the more I use this bait the more I love it. It is so versitile. I also think that twiching jakes is an underused trick
