Location: Central Pennsylvania | Thinking about a finesse setup soon, Stuck between a MH bass spinning rod and a 3/4k spinning reel or a bass casting rod and a casting reel. Both setups would have 20-40 lb braid. It'd be used for husky jerk type stuff, bass jigs, bass spinnerbaits, that sort of stuff. My main question is how much drag is enough for tigers? Second question is am I better off with one than the other? |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | If you are going to use jigs I'd get a spinning rod and reel. You also can work a Husky Jerk style bait a bit easier on spinning tackle. I caught my first dozen or so muskies over 50 on spinning gear with 17# mono, so superline will work fine. The drag will be plenty on about any spinning reel you choose, it transfers differently on a spinning reel than a casting reel. The rod can be a MH 7' model. Stay away from overly heavy action spinning rods as they don't cast well, set the hook well, or offer any real feel for a jig. You will want to hold the rod with the reel foot between your third and little finger, and it should balance well there. Tip heavy a lot is bad. |

| For what its worth, my custom jig/creature throw back rod is made from a blank designed for bass guys tossing heavy jigs into very heavy cover. Tricked out Ambassador 4500 bait caster loaded with 20# Power Pro. Around 7'2" and with a whippy top but a gorilla backbone. Don't like the spin cast route because it seems so much harder to underhand toss the jig/creature exactly where I want it within 25' of the boat. |

Steve, do you recommend fast or extra fast? I was actually debating that very question yesterday on ordering a Legend Elite medium heavy spinning rod. Currently I am leaning towards fast for the twitch bait reason you identified, as well as horizontally fishing swim bait Doug Stange style.

| A Stradic 4000 is plenty for tigers and muskies as I've landed fish up to 50 inches. I team it with a med./heavy Bionic Blade Bass Pro rod. I'd lean towards 30 lb braid if any weeds or wood around, plus it still is light enough to cast a good distance. I get way better action on small creature lures and small cranks, topwaters, or bucktails with this set-up compared to a baitcaster. Heavier lures I use a baitcaster almost exclusively. Good luck. |
