My method is the following: Drill a 1/8" dia home through the bait, use the hole position to center a 1" dia recess on both sides that is roughly as deep as a quarter, then drill a 3/4" hole through the bait. Epoxy a quarter in on one side, dry, turn bait, add 1/2" ball bearing, epoxy quarter into the recess on side 2 and dry. The size of the ball bearing determines the sound of the klunk you'll hear. Large bearings deep klunk, smaller bearings higher pitched clunk.

what’s Large???  Kind of a general term.  Old School rattles often were made from spent .22 shells, and all the way up to.45 caliber;) Spent shells make good chambers;)

Knew a guy that used dimes as side panels for rattles. Not sure if 1 should use government property for rattles;)

There are also glass rattle chambers  in different sizes out there. Some flanged. Also there R Buckshot rattles!

Some others use brass tubing In different sizes, simply bought from hardware stores. Lots of options;)

Bass rattles are just to small for me so I will go with like a 3/16" SS bearing.

Another option to consider is using plastic for your end caps. I like circuit board material but 1/16" lexan is good too. It produces a lower frequency knock than metal does. More of a clunk than a clink.

A clunk or a clink that is the question.

Ive always been a rattle Junky. Caught thousands of fish on rattle baits. All specie. All baits! Plastics, spinnerbaits, crank baits, gliders...etc. I believe I was a driving force in one famous crank bait maker today, to insert rattles in his cranks;)  Fishing bass circuits in my younger days, the importance of rattle traps was a technique you needed to have!!! There were certain brand of  traps that stood out. I also modified my traps that incorporated only 1 treble for more versatility.

Have you ever split a rattle trap in half?  Seemed like the better ones had multiple chambers. There were different size steel shot inside that gave you both the clunk, and the Ting! A Low and high frequency! Dueling Rattles....awesome!

I am making a top water with wood head and a prop that puts out a nice ting to it with two 7/0 trebles with flash or hair tied on. Plus I will be trying out my crank/trolling 7.5 with a rattle in it. Time will tell.
