Posts: 2 | Morning guys, Looking to take the family on a fishing trip the week of June 21st. I've fished Leech Lake twice in the past, but that was just over 20 years ago. For the past 20 years, we've been going to the Hayward area, but this year we've decided to change it up. Family seems to want to either go to Leech or Vermilion. I just want to make sure everybody gets on fish. My oldest is a musky guy, my middle one loves fishing for panfish and walleye. Youngest is a hardcore bass angler. I fish for everything, I just chase the hot bite. Between Leech and Vermilion, which would provide the most action overall? I do sincerely appreciate any tips you guys could give me. Thank you.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Spring Bay.... West End of Vermilion. Great family resort with lots to do. Fishing isn't bad either You have already been to Leach. Explore Vermilion, you won't regret staying at S.B.

Posts: 455 | A smaller boat can fish the West end of Vermillion better than Leech IMO. Depends what kind of rig your running. Other waters to explore in the Leech lake area if its blowing. I think Muskie fishing will be better at Leech than Vermillion, but bass fishing will be better on Vermillion than Leech. Downtown Walker is better than Cook if your wife is interested in that stuff. Both good options, I've enjoyed my times at both.

Posts: 2 | Thanks for the help so far, guys. I’m in a crestliner 1750 and my oldest has an older alumacraft 17 with a 60. I’m really not all that concerned with the musky fishing. My oldest knows the drill and if he doesn’t boat one, he won’t be disappointed. I’m just thinking that this is probably going to be one of the last, or maybe even the last trip we take as a whole family, so I’m just looking to put fish in the boat regardless of what they are and make sure everybody gets bit. Last few trips have been tough, so I’m more interested in chasing action instead of trophies. I’ll take a look at both spring bay and whispering winds. Any other thoughts? Thanks again for the help so far. Edited by matt7487 3/17/2021 12:25 PM

Especially since you don’t care about muskies much. So many of us have said it before so I won’t beat it to death but I promise you will be disappointed going muskie fishing on vermilion. You’ll definitely have more action on leech, and walleye fishing is definitely better there too. There are a lot of great multi species lakes in Minnesota and the two you suggested will have the most people by far. Just my opinion.

Posts: 1671 | You will have a hard time with the June 21 date if you haven't already booked. You might end up at one of the Casinos on either lake. At this point I would say Leech. There are a ton of little lakes around if the wind blows and they all provide multi species opportunities.

Posts: 3136 | Leech is usually a slow starter..mid july,,but you will have smaller lakes in the longville area that you can hop to,,at vermilion your pretty much stuck with being there if its off.

Posts: 347 Location: Vilas County, WI | We booked at a resort on Vermilion a month ago; and we got the last cabin available for all of June, July, and August for that resort. It was slim pickings. As mentioned above, with Canada still closed and in limbo, all the resorts in MN and northern WI are getting booked instead. Last year we had a good time on Vermilion. It was a mixed bag trip with crappies, walleyes, and a little musky action.

Posts: 32801 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I've fished both for all species. Either will be great for a vacation, but I'd prefer the West end of Vermilion for the overall experience. No matter what happens with the weather I can get out with a 16.5' boat, and there are literally dozens of spots we catch largemouth, smallmouth, pike, nice bluegills, and exceptional crappies. Even during the busy times we never had problems finding a place to fish. Muskies are tough, but my son got a 52.75 there last year. OFM goes to Vermilion a couple of times a year driving over and heading back the same day to my son's cabin in Delta, WI to get images for crappie promotions.

Posts: 20181 Location: oswego, il | I have and used a 14ft boat on Vermillion, the best resort for me was glenwood lodge and fishing the east and north side of pine island. Good bass pike and walleye too. If you want some panfish for dinner then you need to fish the west side and stay on that end. My kids really enjoyed the action rice bay provides. If you have a preference for clearer or darker water gives you a.choice between which side as well. I like dark water. June is when the walleye anglers descend on the lake you have to book well in advance. Edited by ToddM 3/18/2021 1:40 PM

Posts: 1189 | Another Vermilion west end option to check is White Eagle. Basically a block south and across the street from Spring Bay. Stayed there many times in the 90's when their parents ran the place. Like all of them, they will have few openings, though.

Posts: 1 | Hello, I own a resort on Leech and we are completely booked that week, but if want some help with recommendations, or fishing, you can absolutley IM me. I haven't fished Vermillion so I wouldn't be great at comparing the two, but I do fish quite a bit. On Leech that would be a great time for walleyes, pike, and bass. The smallmouth here fly under the radar, but the fishing can be great with quality fish. The other advice you have received on muskies is mostly true, but there are areas in the lake where you can get consistent action in June. Good luck and I'm sure you'll have fun with your family trip no matter which lake you choose!
