Have any of you an idea about why these big lunkers, be it northerns or muskies, suspend over deep water? What are they doing, with what or how do you have the best shot at hooking one of them?

Goota agree with anonymous on this one. Food is abundant on most lakes away from structure, and with increased pressure on our fisheries, many species are spending more time out there. I like to fish for suspendos earlier in the season(June is best for me) when the thermocline is still high(18' or less), and I can work any lure with confidence in connecting with fish(including surface baits). My favorites are crankbaits that run in the 7-10 foot range however.

even though nothing else appeared on the depthfinder? I think diving jerkbaits can do the trick or shallow diving crankbaits in June, but later on in the season. I had this happen to me in August. We took 4 northerns in onde day: 93cm, 97cm, 105cm and 112cm. All were suspended above 9m of water, the one of 105cm even above 12m of water. 3-4 of the biggest signals appeared on the screen and bang: we got one. After that we returned: bang another one. No baitfish in sight and we trolled supershadraps that ran about 3m deep. Never saw that again.
