Location: Southern WI | So... after getting a pretty nasty case of Muskie fever after having it wear off about a decade ago Fall 2020 has left me jonesing and I am not ready to end the season. I am planning a trip in January with my partner but haven’t made a final decision on the lake(s). Have pretty much narrowed it down to Webster/surrounding area, Kinkaid, or Cave Run. Vote where you would go (considering this time of year) or feel free to make a recommendation...
Distance is an issue but not a big one, as is hiring a guide.

Location: Perryville, MO | Few (if any) fish Kinkaid in January. I'm not saying it can't be done, but that's the only month of the cool-water season that I don't go. Typically, the end of February kicks things off again. So my vote would be to go further South. I'm not really familiar enough to say, but Cave seems to act a lot like Kinkaid. I'd take the above advice and go to Melton Hill. |

Location: E. Tenn | The only downside to Melton Hill would be finding a place to stay.. Few if any hotels are particularly boat friendly, as far as ample parking, and a place to charge batteries and such. A lot of campgrounds have closed either for the season, or over COVID concerns. There was a guy who posted on the reports board, who came down in November, and stayed at a campground. He didn't specifically say which one.. |

Location: oswego, il | The Webster area can be iffy in January depending on the ice if there is any. It can be fishable for sure but I would make those plans closer to the time you wanted to go. |

Location: Southern WI | Thanks guys. After hundreds of views and 0 replies I was starting to lose faith in this site. I guess I’ll scratch the original lakes and add the lakes mentioned to the drawing board. I’ve got a little time to think and want to make an informed decision...

Location: Athens, Ohio | A couple excellent resources for southern muskie fishing are guides Gregg Thomas (Cave Run / Green River) and Chris Haley (Buckhorn, Melton Hill, KY rivers). I'm sure they wouldn't mind talking to you even if you don't hire them. m |

Location: Southern WI | ^^^ Somehow I’d feel guilty asking those guides for advice and then not booking them. We pushed the date back and are now fixated on Green River. Still nervous as that’s a long haul to be confident about. |

| Green River can be good though a little later is better. Melton Hill and Great Falls and some Tennessee rivers are worth fishing during the real early season. Cave Run receives a lot of pressure compared to these other locations. I use to fish down in Tennessee around the Christmas, New Years holiday season, you can generally catch at least a few fish. Melton Hill fishes like a summer fishery when they are generating at the Bull Run steam plant, I've caught fish on bucktails and topwaters when they are generating. Good luck. |
