Location: Brainerd Area | Im looking at heading out on Sat to do a little tip-up fishing and was wondering is anyone has any trick that they would like to share, depth, size of sucker minnows ect.

In general ice fishing for muskies can be very hard on the fish, the fish can easily take the bait down the throat thus leading to mortality. This is such a problem the DNR is actually considering altering the muskie season in Minnesota to prevent this. |

Location: Racine, Wi | If you are gonna hit the ice, try jigging some fuzzy duzzits. Maybe rig a sucker on a quick set rig, but keep it close to you so that if you get a fish, it won't have time to swallow it.

| If you're planning on fishing Musky here in Wisconsin, think again. It's Illegal.......... " To fish for a species during the closed season for that species (This includes catch and release fishing)." Quoted directly from the regs. I cant believe that with all the numbers of guys on sites like this that parctice CPR, preach CPR and get all excited about Musky welfare that some guys blatantly go out and fish Musky in the winter. If you truely are Musky anglers....Obide by the Seasonal regs please. Once you realize that the fish you hooked (if on purpose or accident) is a Musky, it must be cut off and not landed....NOT even for pictures or viewing! Accidents happen while pike fishing, but the use of oversized gear and bait (12+" sucker minnows/Smelt)can and will get you a citation. You can use the "Oh, I was just pike fishing" excuses all you want, but a true sportsman leaves the Closed Season species alone! Editor's Note: Chill, Mr. Warden! DUCK is from Minnesota. Duck is in Minnesota. The season closes the same time as Walleye, and Pike, which is Feb 15.

| I actually know a few guys that target Muskies in the winter in MN. They are very quiet about it for fear the Super Friends will come after them. Most jig in a ice house set up much like a dark house with a large spear type hole. They can actually view the fish coming in and hitting the lure. They are typically in 15' or less of water and are inside a heated ice house so they fish is "boated" into the house and doesn't freeze. I think this is much different than putting out tip ups and then throwing the fish on the ice to remove hooks. At the recent Minnesota Muskie Alliance meeting the DNR rep brought this subject up and the DNR is considering a closed season on Muskellunge earlier than Feb. 15th in MN. In support of Duck he is fishing out of a Frabill XL and has heat and release tools ready. Also he has quick strike rigs only and sits on the holes. I know this because he is given a ton of BS by non winter anglers who assume he is flopping that baby on the ice. I know cause I was one that used to give him BS till he showed me that not all is evil.

The first jimk, You talk about how hard it is on the fish to fish for them through the ice. Fishing in July and Aug can be very hard on them as well, but I bet you fish during these months. You say that the fish can get throat hooked by fishing through the ice. Its just as easy for a fish to take a bucktail, jerk bait, crank bait, ect. down deep as well, but I bet you fish with these lures dont ya. Just because YOU dont think it should be done dosnt meen that its wrong and cant be done right.
Mr G, I would never fish for them out of season nor would I do anything to harm the fish or the fishery.
Till they change the law and close the season early, I will do so legally. If I feel in any way I am hurting the fish I will stop, till then

Location: Ogden, Ut | I believe Duck is right. Catching them in the winter months (where legal) is probably considerably easier on the fish than catching them in the warm summer months. Water temps are low and this is reflected in the fish's lower body metabolism (and resultant need for oxygen). And cold water is capable of holding more dissolved oxygen than warmer water resulting in a quicker post-catch recovery rate. (Whereas it is capable of holding more oxygen, it sometimes does not hold it's capacity due to ice cover and other oxygen use under the ice - often seen later in the year).
I don't think I'd advocate holding them up for pictures outside in sub-zero temps w/ a stiff wind, but the way Duck is purported to do it should pose no harm to the fish. As always, being prepared to catch, properly handle and release is key to survival of the fish.
(Duck - if Minnesota closes their season early as rumored, you can always come out here and chase 'em - our season never closes).

Location: Brainerd Area | Well im sorry to say I didnt get one. But the season isnt over yet either.
Sorenson, If it wasnt for the Chicago Musky Expo I probably would make a trip somewhere. But I can only make so many trips in a year.
