I still cant understand why my son only likes to fish for muskies. I took him to Canada when he was a kid and we caught plenty of Walleyes and big jacks. But muskies, I never understand.

Why do you like to fish for muskies so much, what is the disire that drives you to the ends of the earth to catch them? []

Hey Dennis!
If there was an easy answer to that question, there would be no need for MuskieFIRST to exist. A Muskie is mystery, excitement, drama, disappointment, glory, and disaster, all wrapped up in a scaly, smelly package that is not even any good to eat.

Some find them beautiful, others crafty, others yet, an enigma. I just try to find them.

A muskie is also the PERFECT fish for those that are not real successful anglers with the other species, as NO ONE is actually expected to catch one, and if one does, one is to immediately release the magnificent creature back to the murky depths from whence it came, rendering muskie fishing to be the PERFECT sport for those that have a tendency to stretch the truth just a bit...

'Cept for me, of course. Slap that boy up side the head for me, OK?[:halo:]

Mr.Smith,That sounds like my father several years ago!He has come to understand and never caught one, that it has become not just a sport or fishing but a passion. He used to ask go`in to get some grouse, pheasants?Did`nt you stick one yet,I`m ready to go tracking? Now he says wheres the newest pictures of the latest toothy-critters and here is your christmas present don`t spend it all at R&H!Don`t forget to get Richie(my 14yr. old)some gaint lures too!He as I have come to realize that its the greatest sport there is and its full of great people and big surprizes! Its hard and challanging, taxing at times but ultimate Fun!So after all this I guess I cant explain it either, but BIG FISH WITH BIG TEETH AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST BAIT! Papa Smith,

I've had alot of people ask me the same question...and after very little thought (Can't take time away from Muskie thoughts) i came up with... Panfish, Bass, Pike & even Wet Rags are easy to catch compared to the toothy ones. That is one reason.

As for me... Someone along time ago told me that catching a muskie was almost impossible. That it took 10,000 casts. That it wasn't worth my time. They were wrong! It's been worth every second...even the early ones that added up to many, many seconds watching my brother catching why I sat in the back wondering why I wasn't catching anything. It the challenge of catching an animal that has a reputation of uncatchable.

Mr Smith, thats a tough question, for 35yrs i've been chasing these goofy fish, 21 as a guide and its 5:45am and I'm getting ready to leave to do it again just as I did yesterday and 138 days prior to that just this year. And even though theres a pay-check at the end of this day I'd do it if there wasn't, call me crazy but I've never claimed to be sane. I met your son this past June and in that short time I could tell he has the same sickness as do all of us here, MUSKIE FEVER![]

Mr. Smith...... be thankful you have a son who enjoys the outdoors and chooses a challenging, beautiful, and soul satisfying way to be in nature chasing one of the great game animals of North America, and the only one we can capture and release for others to enjoy. My Father intriduced me to this great adventure after the second world war.

It's just so hard to explain.Somepeople try it and don't get a thing, other people get the fever so bad they are change for ever. It's just get into your blood. So many tatics, lures, water, time of the year, and let's not forget moon phases. Why other fish loose out and muskies win out I don't know. All I know is that I will cast or troll all day to may be catch one even though other fish are willing biting. They just get me going,It's a rush that I can't get off other fish.So I'am wierd,I can live with myself. Mr. Smith....for one, I know Jason spent time trolling for them trout and salmon creatures in the big water more than once this year. So his predeliction for musky is not absolute. Of course, maybe he did this just to throw us off the scent[;)] .

As for the reason for soooooooooo much musky mayhem is it allows him to drive his fancy smancy boat really fast from spot to spot all the time.

But rest assured, after fishing with him a few days this year he still has his sanity. But that may go given time....look at the Worrall guy, he's almost completely bonkers. So it can get worse with age.

The Doc's Opinion,
BrianW

PS: BTW he's got good teeth! And is darn nice guy to boot---ya must have raised him good!![] [] [] []

Wow 500th user, thats a good thing LOL.

A muskie is the ultimate challenge for any outdoorsman and some of us are lucky enough to have plenty of them and some trophy ones in our backyards.

Now as mentioned above by the Doc, Jason was chasing them salmonoids this summer as well I think he hunts so he is not as adicted as some of us.

This is my typical day, I get up and take my medicine then head off to the bathroom and read an article from one of my muskie magazines eat breakfast and go fish all day. Then when I get home I spend one hour or two reading the boards as well as reading and answering e-mails about muskie fishing. Again I go read another article then I take a couple of hours off to watch some tv and by the time I go to bed I am already thinking of what I am going to do in the morning to catch some of these creatures.

Even in the winter I spend some 4 ot 6 hours a day reading or writing about my favorite fish. I also have not fished or hunted for anything else in over 7 years now.[:sun:]

I am a sick puppy but I love it and would'nt change a thing.[]

Wow!!!My Dad is on line and the 500th registered user. I wonder how that happended.[;)] []

My Dad taught me many things, muskie fishing just wasnt one of them. He did however let me buy a boat before I owned my own car. That says a lot. He took me on at least 8 Canada walleye/pike slam fests back in the late 70's and 80's and I will never forget them. He caught a muskie with me last year and is just starting to understand, but if he doesnt that would be fine too.

Yes I have toned down a bit, fishing salmon and other things from time to time, you have too change a little. When you guide and pound the water after creature that drives up your blood preasure, you need to sometimes relax. I found I enjoyed my last season of fishing for muskies a lot more when I took the time to fish for other fish a little.[;)]

You have to do what you enjoy because you enjoy it. Otherwise you end up all nuttso like Worrall.[]

Look at the catagories of lures we use...JERK baits...TWITCH baits...GLIDE baits...it's a trauma just to tie on the lure...Hellraisers, Slammers, Undertakers,Pigs, Reef Hawgs, .....No class, these mean old muskies.

Walleyes have nice sounding lures like Jig a whopper, Reef runner, Wally diver, Hot N, Tot...meek, easy going little guys, those walleyes...

Look at the Magazines...Musky HUNTER, Muskies INC, Esox Angler...

With walleyes it is Walleye Insider...sneaky...
